If you search for "chrome addons" or "google chrome addons" the first site is well, not Google Chrome. It's in the 2nd position, but the first site is a website that just features addons for the Google browser.

If this is someone's site or if I should take the keyword off then I will. I'm not here to uncover someone's niche and ruin their profits, but rather just to point out that there's a site beating Google and see everyone's thoughts on the matter.

Not that you would have very much competition if you can actually BEAT Google at it's own game :D

I guess that would be because the exact keyword is in the domain name for the first one.

But wouldn't Google have that in the algorithm? Something like "No site beats Google"

I mean, although another site is maybe optimized a bit better, wouldn't Google know that their providing of the Chrome addons is spot-on and exactly what users are looking for when they search for "chrome addons"?

Well Google is still first because he can use he's own ad system. Congrats for that guy for getting in 1st place in google (for 3 words keyword - not that hard cause I bet google doesn't have a bunch of people posting irrelevant comments and creating forum profiles), but the ultimate test and umiliation for google will be to type Google in Google and show your site. Slim chances but wouldn't it be nice to see something like this ? :saeek:

google would need to have a wildcard that any long tail search containing their name ranks lower than pages of their own. Not impossible, but probably something that they are philisophically against.

There's nothing in the algorithm that says you can't outrank Google, it just haves massive authority so on things like this it's really really hard.

That being said, I can't come up with a single reason this site could outrank the official site. It's a complete mystery.

Yeah there's a bunch but they also link to a few other sites, are nofollow and are on discussion pages which are kind of lonely. Domain authority passed but not much else really.

Guys go to google and type in "search engine" or "search engines" and see what shows up. Google is very aware of all the law suits out there for anti competition. Infact they are being hammered in the European courts right now! SO no they wouldn't put something like google wins all in their algorithm! That would be just asking for a BIG Law suit.

When I said they probably have something in their algorithm that says "No one outranks Google" I was kidding just a bit :D

What I'm just wondering is why the actual developer's site is being beat by an outside site. And in fact the outside site that is ranking #1 is an authority site from the navigation links right under it.

I just thought that Google would know the most about add-ons for the Chrome browser, which is why they would be ranking first.

But who knows. This guy found a loophole and I'm sure is very profitable and very good at SEO. Kudos to him.

I don't think google can easily be forced from the outside to implement changes as to what result to show where in the list because they can argue (and have done it successfully) it is their opinion which falls under the freedom of speech condition as defined in the amendment. It is a valid defence in the US.

Europe as a whole has a shot on it though as the freedom of speech there is practically non existant with only a few countries being an exception that still see this clause as more than just a piece of paper.
