I am competing for a keyword with lots of exact searches (4k+) but low competition because it's almost impossible to monetize.

My site is optimized perfectly and I've built up some backlinks for this new website (2 months old) and when I search for the keyword my website is now #1. But as far as Google and anybody else is concerned it's actual ranking for this term is non-existent and my lack of any traffic is proof of it.

How come it's ranking for me on my computer, but it's not actually ranking for anybody else? I went from position 38, to 27, to 22, back to 27, then up to 1 a few days ago. Because of this seemingly natural rank shifting during my backlink building, I assumed it was the real ranking. But not so much.

You could also do it in an "incognito" window signed out of google. But yeah he is 100% right, personalized search results because you probably spend a large amount of time on the site, clicking it in results, etc

If you search using Google, the result will often be based on websites you have spent time on before. And if your logged in to a Google account you will probably always find your own pages on top since you spend a lot of time on them.. If you use G webmaster tools you will se a ranking under the keyword section, this can indecate your ranking position and if you move up or down..
*edit: I see others have given better advices while I wrote this..
