So First of all, sorry for my english, it´s not my first language...

I created my channel in 2015 and start post videos in that channel, the videos are basically, funny compilations, the channel has grow up fast, considering that i know nothing about SEO stuff at that time...
I post something like 14 or 15 videos in 3 months, i make 1m+ views at total and the channel get 5k+ subscribers, i also signed with a network at that time...
After that i just stop making videos for the channel, because making the videos was a little bit difficult and i was not getting any money of that...

So in 2018 i decided to post my music in that channel (i make instrumentals), so i put all old videos in private, change the name and art's of the channel and then post my first video (with basically SEO, tags and description)...
For my surprise the video get something like 30k views in 1 day, i don't do anything i just posted, after 2 day i posted another one, and again 20k views in the first day (At that time the first video already has 90k+ views...)
So then i decided to delete the old videos of my channel, and that was the WORST DECISION...
After delete the old videos, the 2 "new" videos stopped getting views and when i posted a new video, that video don't get any views and the same happens with other videos that i have posted after that...

I really don't understand youtube, how they can just ruined a channel just like that ?

Well i just want to share my expirience and I hope nobody makes the same mistake as me...

you are right in 100%, to delete OLD videos with OLD watch-time was the worst decision you made!
YouTube ranking algorithm score each channel based on few factors, one of the important factors is related to the watch time the channel collected in the past

Do you think retention or total watch time is a more important ranking factor?

Both on old videos for channel authority, and on an individual videos for individual ranking?

The traffic stopped completely after deleting the old videos?
Youtube does value old videos with their watch time, but I don't think the value of those videos is so high that it can just kill the whole channel.

OP, can you show some stats from your analytics?

Not Completely, but like i said, the first video had 90k+ views in 3 days and after that just 1000-600 views per day... After 1 week reduced to 100-50 views i think...

It makes sense that your vidoes would get less views over time, especially in comparison to the first few weeks.
How much views your new video generated? How similar it was to the previous 2?

Even though your videos were hidden, YouTube still saw them as high engagement and they influenced YTs decision to recommend videos from your channel.

Traffic to new videos is highly influenced by appearing in YT recommendations. When you deleted your videos, YTs algorithm lost the signals that videos from your channel should be recommended to other YT users.

This is a technique that has been discussed in other threads but is often underutilized or not recognized by many people who are starting on YT.

Videos that you hide or make private have a much lower chance of being punished by YT but still give you their benefit with the YT algorithm.

When you delete videos, as opposed to merely hiding them, you lose those benefits for your channel.

wow i doubted this but needed to know as i was not sure. however i have a question, is there any way this can be restored? or is it like lost forever? restored in the sense i keep uploading and making more videos and working pretty hard on quality content until it triggers the algo again, and after that i would never repeat the mistake of deleting old videos . do u think that would work?

that sounds bad. are u sure? because what if a channel wanted to delete old videos for some reason and plan to start new content. i dont think they can just seal the fate of a channel permanently. maybe they can but that would be bad.

can someone else with experience please confirm if they were ever able to restore ranking by doing new videos and working hard again and uploading frequently?

I think it would be really hard to restore. Reposting funny compilation videos that get traffic wouldn't fit with your channel niche that is now your music videos. Best is probably to keep sharing and promoting your content. Your channel is just going to grow more slowly.

This is one method that you can do on YouTube that you did by accident but others do as a method. There are multiple threads on BHW going into a lot more detail.

    1. Post compilation/copied/copyright material to get lots of views and subscribers.
    2. Hide/private the videos before getting caught/punished.
    3. Repeat 1 & 2 until you have lots of channel views and subscribers.
    4. Hide all your crap videos but do not delete them
    5. Rebrand your channel and start producing your original content
    6. Once you have original content getting views/likes/subscribers - monetize. If that's your goal.

Once you hit #5 your new original videos will get boosted by the YT algorithm based on the metrics from your hidden videos.

One of the BHW threads (can't remember the user) goes into a lot of detail in how he does this using popular anime clips for steps #1 and 2.

The key is to hide videos before YT punishes your channel or before you get copyright strikes that take down the videos (losing their power the same way as if you deleted them) or get your channel gets deleted for too many strikes.

Even people who have been denied monetization due to compilation videos or reused content have been able to simply make those videos private and reapply successfully with new original videos based on the metrics from the denied but now hidden videos.

so are u saying when a channel gets reviewed for monetization , yt staff don't check private videos?? well I'm already monetized but i deleted all my unlisted/private videos before i applied for monetization coz i thought yt would check them and reject.

and u also said to promote boost my videos etc. now if i promote/boost my videos will that help in restoring the rank?

but i just want to know if he restore thing is lost forever with no way to get back

    I can't say 100% sure but yes.

It won't restore anything. It's just the normal white-hat way of building a channel.

@ziko12345 said it's possible to get YT to restore deleted videos. I've never done that so I'd search Google, forums, etc. to see if it's possible and how to do it.

yes ik it won't restore anything but I'm just asking that means I will never get recommended by yt again in my life no matter what i do??
i doubt that is the case. i mean I'm not saying my channels old ranking must be restored but I'm saying i just want to know if i can get recommended again or not

Sure. YT hasn't penalized you. You're just not getting the benefit of the the old videos because they are deleted.

aha if that's the case then all good. sorry i guess it was a misunderstanding then. becoz i personally don't care about the benefits of the old videos. i just misunderstood and thought that i was penalized and can never get into recommendations again.

but since that's not the case then nothing to worry coz i have my methods and niche to easily get into recommendations again. thanks for info bro

let's assume the channel scoring is measured with points, so you get some points for your total watch-time vs channels that got less watch-time
the retention will show how interesting is your content, of course that is still the most important factor that is really hard to fake now...

so if you compare 2 channels with 6000 hours of watch-time, the channel with the higher average % retention rate will have the best ranking score (or ranking "power")
but it's not that simple, since 100 videos of 1 min long (with awesome retention), will not count as 1 video of 100 min long, YouTube will calculate it with factors that allows them to detect the "interesting" content and to grant is with ranking benefits, since they want that content to be on top of search and get more suggestions.

that is why professional YouTube CPA marketers are farming channels with OLD music videos that got OLD watch time with organic high retention, those channels are like gold since you can use that ranking authority to promote CPA offers on YouTube and get a head of the competition, this is also the answer to many newbies question that asks 'how that channel manage to rank for such high volume keywords in that niche"
