I analyze up to 100 websites earning at least 50,000 sessions per month, according to GA. The advance operator for finding these websites can be found HERE .

Objective:
The main purpose of this research is to find common trends among these websites, with Ahrefs as our preferred audit tool.

i. Find Correlation between;
  • DR and Website Traffic
  • No -follow Links and Website Traffic
  • Do- Follow Links and Website Traffic

Scraped Dataset: HERE
Cleaned with HERE , then pulled metrics with Batch Analysis Tool: HERE

Before diving deeper into specific analysis, I tried to understand the holistic overview of all available Ahrefs metrics to see if there was any common ground.

Summary and Explanation:

Code:
• Domain Rating (DR) is positively correlated with metrics like Domains (0.89), 'Ref domains Do- follow' (0.88), and 'Total Keywords* (0.53).

• Total Traffic also has a moderate positive correlation with 'Total Keywords (0.64).

• Ref IPs and 'Ref SubNets are also highly correlated (0.99), which is expected as they are related metrics.

Please note:
  • A value closer to 1 implies a strong positive correlation: as one variable increases, the other also tends to.
  • A value closer to -1 implies a strong negative correlation: as one variable increases, the other tends to decrease.
  • A value close to 0 implies no correlation

Moving forward;
  • DR and Website Traffic

Summary and Explanation:

Code:
The scatter plot above illustrates the relationship between Domain Rating and Total Traffic for each website in the dataset.

• Correlation Coefficient: 0.33

The correlation coefficient of 0.33 suggests a low to moderate positive relationship between Domain Rating and Total Traffic. This means that a higher Domain Rating generally tends to result in higher traffic, although the relationship is not very strong.

  • Nofollow Links and Website Traffic

Summary and Explanation:

Code:
The scatter plot above shows the relationship between the number of NoFollow backlinks and the total traffic for each website in the dataset.

• Correlation Coefficient: 0.50

The correlation coefficient of 0.50 suggests a moderate positive relationship between the number of NoFollow backlinks and total traffic. As the number of NoFollow backlinks increases, the total traffic also tends to increase.

  • Do Follow LInks and Website Traffic

Summary and Explanation:

Code:
The scatter plot above illustrates the relationship between the number of Do -Follow backlinks and the total traffic for each website in the dataset.

Correlation Coefficient: 0.45

The correlation coefficient of 0.45 suggests a moderate positive relationship between the number of Do -Follow backlinks and total traffic. This implies that as the number of Do- Follow backlinks increases, total traffic also tends to increase, although the relationship is not perfectly linear.

I know you might be asking, which specific metric from all Ahrefs datapoint has highest correlation with the Traffic for each individual website?
1695219969227.png

Code:
Here are main variables and their correlation coefficients with *Total Traffic " rank in descending order.

• 'Total Keywords: 0.78
• 'Backlinks NoFollow: 0.50
• 'Total Backlinks: 0.48
• 'Backlinks Do -Follow: 0.45
• 'Domain Ratings: 0.33

My Observation and Conclusion:

1. Strong Correlation Between Keywords and Traffic:
The variable 'Total Keywords" has the strongest correlation with 'Total Traffic (r = 0.74). Websites ranking for more keywords tend to get more traffic. This is just common sense.

2. Moderate Correlation with Backlinks: No Follow', Ref IPs', Backlink Text', and 'Total Backlinks* have moderate correlations with 'Total Traffic. This suggests that, while backlinks are important, they're not the only factor driving traffic.

3. Domain Rating and Traffic: There's a moderate correlation between Domain Rating and 'Total Traffic (p = 0.33), indicating that websites with higher domain ratings generally attract more traffic.

4. Diverse Backlink Portfolio: Websites have different types of backlinks, including "No Follow, 'Do -Follow", 'Governmental, and 'Educational. However, Do Follow backlinks are more numerous on average.

5. Low Correlation with Ahrefs Rank: The negative correlation between 'Ahrefs Rank and 'Total Traffic suggests that a lower Ahrefs Rank (which is better) doesn't necessarily mean higher traffic, though this could be industry-specific.

Please note : that this report is based on the data from Ahrefs only, which may not reflect the complete picture of the SEO factors that affect traffic growth. Other metrics, such as domain age, site age, content authority, and data from other sources like SEMrush or MOZ, could provide more insights and accuracy on SEO priorities and strategies.

where nice study.
i was very much interested in no-follow links
I had done this single research about no-follow links usage on my own site, by adding no-follow links to send third-party sites and seeing their ranks increase in google SERP for keywords related to my article. (its weird though)

What you have done is an excellent job. What I find shocking/surprising is the positive correlation between number of NO-Follow links and traffic.

Did you narrow this traffic down to Organic traffic alone or total traffic?

Do you think the results could have been different?

Damn what a great job, how long did it take to make those infographics?
It's pretty just a few lines of code when you have the dataset.

Since Ahrefs metrics were mainly used for this report, I'd assume the traffic source is organic. Moreover, all these metrics ( dr,ref domain, ) attribute to organic traffic medium.

I'm asking because the title mentioned Google Analytics. Nevertheless, it's an interesting report.

Nice post! I found it particularly interesting, specifically the 'no-follow' aspect.
My theory here is that NoFollow links are more likely to indicate a natural link profile as opposed to purchased backlinks, which sometimes have a neg impact.
