I can't seem to find a simple answer to my problem. I currently use Pretty Link Lite, and all of my links start with my website URL, and then I am only able to choose what the ending says. But I don't really like that format. I just want the link to say whatever I want without having my website mentioned in the beginning of the link at all.

What is the best WordPress plugin to do that? I don't see an option in Pretty Link Lite, so I assume it doesn't have the capability to do so.

Also, I want to include links within a post that link to different products from the same company I'm affiliated with. So for those I would just want the cloaked link to be a single word or two.

It just seems odd to me that you would have your own website name in each cloaked affiliate link. That seems suspicious and the whole point of cloaking is to make it seem like you are not affiliated.

    Thanks

Actually, the whole point of cloaking is to hide ugly affiliate links to people click them without knowing you're trying to sell them anything. If you're doing stuff like blog posting or article marketing, having a cloaked link with your particular URL can help get more clicks.

Anyway, I found a plugin called "Affiliate Link Cloaking" on wordpress dot org. I haven't used it, so don't know if it'll do what you need. It shortens links. Don't know if you get to choose the shortened version or not. You might just want to do a search for 'link cloaking' on wordpress.org plugins and search through to see if they have what you need.

If not, you can always just buy urls from a provider that offers a domain forwarding service with masking and use that to redirect to your affiliate products or whatever it was.

I agree with you about the purpose of cloaking, but what I'm saying is if you don't want to look like you are selling something, then why would you want to have your website URL in the link? I see lot's of blogs where their affiliate links do not have their website mentioned in them at all, and that seems optimal.

I just installed Affiliate Link Cloaking and it follows the same format as Pretty Link Lite. The cloaked links must start with your website URL. Are all of the link cloaking plugins on WordPress like that?

to clarify -- "link cloaking" is used to mask one URL for another.

Any link cloaking plugin will require your site URL in the link. There's not really another way to do this short of custom javascript. Maybe that could be done with a shortcode but I am not aware of any plugin that does this.

You have mysite.com. You want to link to affiliatesite.com. The typical cloaking link would be something like http://mysite.com/go/product and redirect to the affiliate link on affiliatesite.com.

Think about what is happening, HTML is being served to the user and this is a basic anchor tag that goes to your server and the WP plugin detects the link pattern from the 404 and redirects. If you wanted to change the link to use somesite.com/product there is a problem -- the HTML is pointing to somesite.com -- which presumably isn't your domain. How does the redirect happen? It doesn't.

Again, you could do some javascript and trap the onclick and redirect but this would have to be done in a short code and some CSS.

I'm gonna rain on your parade, and probably on your little plugin you're selling there too.

You can cloak affiliate links using a URL-shortener that has an API such as Tiny URL, I don't know if there is any existing plugin for this, but not difficult to make.

Not raining on my parade - I don't market a link shortener.
