Well... if you're in the U.S., as long as you file it will keep you out of criminal trouble... you can always negotiate a payment plan later on.

knall is absolutely right. You must have made a lot of money for the year so you should
have known this day was coming. I hope you saved at least some of your money.

You should get a professional to do your taxes for you and get as many write-offs as
possible. But you should still file anyway. As mentioned above, you can negotiate a
    payment plan.

Say you put a lot into a 401K and that amount is not taxable.

What I did earlier this year was open an LLC and "employ" my family members - that way you can get a few write-offs. :D

I feel you. I haven't started my taxes because I'm afraid of how much I'll owe...

It's not that we want to cheat the system, but why should I give the govt 100k when I see someone at the store with the new Jordan's whip out the food stamp card. And it's not that, you can look around and see the waste. I don't mind helping those that need help, but I do not want to contribute to fraud from the govt.

But... at least we made the money to begin with...

Work harder, millions on welfare are depending on you...

Yep... Not getting political, as it is not allowed, but the problem is that many who got out in 2008 and voted do not pay income tax because their income is low. It could be 100% and they wouldn't care as they would not have to pay it.

But, all of us BHW members want more than that and we strive to make a living doing what we enjoy.

And it's not just the US - it's across the world. It's a big problem for many countries.

I salute anyone who is working hard to make something of their life.

Someone mentioned something about working out a payment plan with the IRS. All I can tell you from my own past experience they would not let me do that when I inherited a house. I had to get a tax attorney that was known to have a good relationship with them. I then had to go to the bank and borrow the money to pay the IRS. I'm glad I did it the right way.

Ask around to find an attorney that has a good relationship with the IRS, especially if you own a house and other assets. Do not go to an accountant hoping to solve this (no H&R Block).

You may have to borrow against your home, if you own one.

In the future, have a working relationship with an outstanding CPA. They can save you money and you can sleep good at night.

Let us know what you end up working out -

So true. I wouldn't mind paying taxes if it were going to a good cause. Unfortunately that's not the case.

I find it funny when the top 1 percent of income earners paid 38 percent of all federal income taxes in 2008, while the bottom 50 percent paid only 3 percent. Forty-nine percent of U.S. households paid no federal income tax at all...yet the top 1% is still not paying their fair share...Oh really????!! o_0

Without the federal reserve and fiat currency no income tax would exist anyways..study history and monetary policy people and stop bleeting like sheep the propaganda of politicians...there is only one politician running for president right now who wants to end the federal reserve, return us to a gold standard in our monetary policy and get rid of income tax alltogether...No income tax doesn't pay for roads or schools, or anything else...Income tax was created, The Federal Reserve was created and the Gold Standard was abolished ALL within an 18 month window of time.

Income tax WAS CREATED to pay the interest on the loans the federal reserve makes to the US treasury (in the form of Federal Reserve Notes) in which the US treasury gives the FED US Bonds and a promise of interest...If there is only 1 million dollars of currency in existance how can the FED loan that 1 Million dollars to the Treasury AND THE TREASURY pay interest on it? They can't....so the income tax and fractional reserve banking was created!

    EDUCATE EDUCATE EDUCATE YOURSELF PEOPLE!
