learning by doing is a good way!
if you want to have a quicks start and do some small apps i suggest using a rapid application development ide. like dreamweaver cs4 or delphi for php.

i use dreamweaver quite often for small database-apps and you can't code faster than dreamweaver is writing the code itself... but if you want to program complex applications someday i suggest videos and practise practise practise!

use your favorite torrent site ( torrentz . com ) works pretty good and search for Lynda PHP tutorials - that's a good batch of php video tutorials with pretty good explanations. Other than that, I suggest googleing it, at least that's how I find my answers. Oh, and php.net is also a great reference - most of the answers you'll find in people's comments.

    Hope this helps.
