You need a .htaccess file, with the following content:

    Code:
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^yoursite.com
    RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yoursite.com/$1 [R=301,L]

If google, or whoever is visiting your site, it will redirect
    Code:
    http://yoursite.com to http://www.yoursite.com
It does a 301 redirect, which is a permanent redirect, so all the link juice is transferred.

its a 301 redirect, it means that everything under http://yoursite.com has moved to http://www.yoursite.com.

Also when you are linking to your site you'd better keep it the same in all links, even always add trailing slash at the end of your domain name.

Hmm...i have a http:// website ranking and earning with adsense, all backlinks targeting http:// as well. It's still quite new, but growing fast!
All my other websites are http://www...i somehow forgot to change the first one when I made it. I said i'd leave it as it is rather than change to www and have google see them as new addresses and hurt my rankings. But what i'm getting from this thread is if I change it now to http://www and add the .htaccess file mentioned above, i should be all good with google. Right?

It does not matter, IMHO, if you use a version with www or without. What you need to do is check which version google indexed and use .htaccess code to have all backlinks redirected to that version.

Personally, I set all my sites to the version without WWW (It looks much better). But I think it doesn't affect your site. You need to consider though, if your site has no redirects (I know sites that can't be accessed without WWW and vice versa).
