    I work at my mother's retail store http://facebook.com/shoptalkshop .
I was approached by a customer who worked for a store who is one of our competitors who said that with a retail business that sales representatives of the products which we now get from middlemen would go out of their way to push their products on us that they would give us free stuff to sell so we could build a customer base and know what to re-order.

Does anyone have any experience with this stuff ?

Yes, sales reps often give out free merch to stores. Just contact the companies you're interested in, and let them know that you would like to learn more about their products. Give them your contact details. They will send you info and then follow up with a sales call. It's their job to get you to become a customer. When they start pressuring you to take an order, explain that you are unsure if your customers would be interested in their products, and you're not willing to spend the cash to test the market at this time. If they really want you as a customer, they will send you samples to test with.
