If you know what you're doing when it comes to SEO, and you have local business's in your area, racking up a few of them as clients can bring in some great passive income. What I did was get 200 business cards printed out. The front had my business information, and the back had this:

No I didn't use photoshop to make that, I used Paint.

All you have to do is go to google, search for anything, then put the following javascript code into your browser and hit enter:

    javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0

This allows you to edit anything on the page. Type what you want, put your contact details at the bottom in the green and blue text, fix it up in paint/photoshop and there ya go!

    Total investment:

    200 cards printed : $45

Person hired to pass these out at all the big business plazas or wherever there was stores/dentists/painters/etc : $50

After 3 days, I had 6 calls and 1 email from business's. I ended up getting 2 clients for SEO, one at $300/month and the other $200/month. So on a $95 investment I netted an extra $500/month income source.

Get out there and get some damn clients!! If at first you are uncomfortable meeting with business owners and don't believe that you will be able to talk them into hiring you, just keep doing it and eventually you will have a spiel that is so good NO ONE will turn down your services :]

Thanks for this post. I too have been thinking about going local (I've already gone loco). Can you discuss business types besides the obvious list: doctors, lawyers, real estate agents, dentist ... I'm trying to brainstorm some less obvious target customers.

Better to go to the less beaten path than traditional doctors/lawyers etc. There are TONS of businesses that benefit from SEO..just use your imagination. Doctors/dentists/lawyers are just one group, and believe it or not, there are other verticals that are WAY more receptive to SEO/online marketing than the above mentioned...

    psychologists, architects, CPA's etc etc

^ Not the best idea IMO- you dont want to target those who sell wares and $5 cheeseburgers..you want to target those who make GOOD money from clients derived from the web..ie $500++ each.
Also the lifetime value of the client (LTV) is huge..if the business target has clients who are traditionally repeat clients in nature, all the better to target them.
And to the OP- nice card idea. Nice idea to get SEO clients!

What do local people look for? For instance a realtor, do they pay to be ranked as "chicago realtor"?

I own a small business and have done SEO on my own site but its pretty pointless because my market is to saturated compared the the actual searchs. Im on the first page for my "state - business niche" with no traffic because it gets 500 local searches a month?

Im just curiouse what these local people are paying for because I have a huge network to market to when I get some more experience.

With my local clients we always go after the local search like "your city widgets". I always tel them up front that the real traffic will come from the more generic term "widgets" but I ex[plain its important to lock down the local search first for very targeted visitors and that it will make it easier to get the better terms after we already have the long tail local version. For one thing I believe this to be true and for another it gives me more time to work on the more competitive terms for them and they are happy to see some results in the meantime. just my 2 cents.

Here a helpful tool for you guys: bjornenki.c-m/tools/search-results-preview

You can create a Google listing preview. I use it to help create good descriptions.
