Does anyone have experience with subdomains and how building backlinks to them affects the top level?

I'm wondering how penguin and over optimisation penalties on a subdomain would affect a top level domain, and how backlinks to a subdomain might affect ranking to the top level domain.

backlinks building to subdomains is also dangerous.
you might know that quidoo or similar web 2.0 sites also has subdomains system but squidoo dont publish low quality content to their portals. its because of only google panda and penguin.....

1000's of subdomains were effected by panda and penguin because people were heavily link building to these subdomains...

I would say it doesn't, i have a test site with 20 WP sites on subdomains heavily linked (good quality links not spam) and the top level domain doesn't even rank for the mainkeyword in the top 50 while the subdomains are all in the top 4 of their targeted keywords... I don't know if you can conclude anything from this small test so take it as it is...

In most cases,sub-domains are treated allmost like different domains, but don't forget that your domain and sub-domains are hosted on the same IP :)

I'm talking specifically about creating subdomains on existing websites which redirect to another site. I'm interested in how backlinks to the subdomain affect the main domain as they do show up on majestic

I don't think this can help. Just my opinion and I am new to SEO.

I guess an easy way to find out is to get a new domain, trow an article on it,create a subdomain with another article and spam it to death, maybe make it public so other members can trow some links in.I will :)

Then watch the rankings fluctuations on the main domain.

I've created and redirected several subdomains to a fresh domain and i've spammed a significant number of links to these subdomain redirects. However i'm wondering how these links will affect the domains which i created subdomains on. All the spammed links show up in majesticseo.com which makes me wonder if Google counts them towards the main domain too or how a penalty would be applied. This is new ground for me and i'm interested in how Google's automatic algorithm reacts to such uncommon activity.

I thought I should ask here what others think but it looks like no one else knows or is testing like i am.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but how did the experiment work out?

Currently messing around with the same idea and I can't seem to find any information regarding this kind of redirect.

Sub domains treated as a separate domain. So redirecting a sub domain will have the same effect as redirecting a domain.

have you tried this, or you're just guessing like everyone else. :) I mean subdomains are treated as separate domains, but what effect does spamming them have on the main domain. I would love to hear more about this, so if you know something please do share with us. :)

My understanding is that a penalty will not pass from the subdomain to the main domain if there is no linking between the two. AFAIK if you never link from your main domain to your sub you should be ok. Once you close the circle and link both ways you're screwed.
