Introduction (you don't neet to read it)
I am trying to take out of penguin a website that was hit on february. It is a PR4, 10 years old website. It used to had a very good link profile, but I've got greedy. And I paid for my mistake.

I purchased a press release service from the BST section ($79) and the links where pretty lame (I know it has raving reviews, but my experience wasn't good). I also used an old strategy and got some wikipedia links (my content is very wikipedia friendly).
So, I only did those two things and I experienced some improvements. Of course I think it was the Wikipedia thing and not the PR, but I still should mention it.
Wikipedia was a one time thing and my strategy can not be based on that. So, I need to decide how to spend the budget I have to get out of the bench Google putt me in.

Question: how would you spend $2.000 to take a website out of the Penguin, unnatural incoming links penalty.

I'm not looking only for BH, just for what works. Google can't possibly know if a webmaster decided to write about your site or if you sen't him the article and $30. So the real difference is not made by Google's rules, but by Google's possibilities.

I've been in SEO since 2004 and this is the first time I get hit from an update. So I'm not used to deal with this kind of things.

But, let's take the "what-is-blackhat" discussion out. On which whitehat activities would you recommend me to spend the budget?

Well I will assume that your site is overoptimized. How many pages does it have? anyways

    1) Depending on the design of the site I would update it or keep the old one(Make it more use friendly and less spamy) This point may not apply to you.

    2) Create good content and put on your site.(The more pages you have the better internal linking power)

    3) Make sure you have no duplicate content and no duplicate title tags.

    4) I would use the bellow list of web20s and post good content with link back to your site. Only use brand links and urls.

    5) Update those web20s once a week or more ofthen if you can. Backlinks web20s with slow valicity backlinks.

before read that your site is 10years old and PR4 I was to say: invest that money in a new site.

how many indexed pages has your site? it just compeltely desapear from top 500 serps or it was justa few pages?

I managed to recover around 50% of my sites that got hit. but the ones realy bad that completely desapear from top 500 positions those I am giving up.....

Like I said if your site has tons of good quality content then try to recover it if not then build a new one.

You said you bought press release service from BHW (which is realy good actualy) but how do you expect to recover (or rank) any shit in big g from ONE service? you need constant link building (i mean DAILY)..... get some traffic from FB and twitter too!

oh just forgot to mention that if your site was penalized by poor on page seo than you need to fix that first.

Spend a couple hundred having content written for you. Then post more content to your site, and manually create web 2.0 properties with lots of anchor text variation.

I think $2k is very large, is this site REALLY worth saving??

I would invest that in tools, some high PR links and some paid advertising if I really had to.
Remember not all sites take off like we want them to, so don't put all your eggs in one basket.

What I'm trying to say really is don't spend that $2k unless you don't mind losing it, because with all the scams and changes in Google, you can easily be separated with your money.

It has a little over 1.000 pages

    1) My site has a great, clean design.
    2) It doesn't (maybe some tag pages or something, nothing to worry about)
    3) We don't.
    4) and 5) thanks!

    Little over 1.000.
Some terms that were ranking 1 moved to 4-5 (that doesn't sound that bad, doesn't it?), but most of the others that were 1-3 are now 20-50. Terrible!

Maybe I expresses myself poorly: what I didn't like was the objective results I've got: links. My PR appeared on like 10 sites, cause 950 of them are all from the same subdomain (*financialcontent.com).

I have started building links on Twitter (I have some experience with it), but Facebook is something new for me. Any pointers?

    Thanks for your time, man!

    Yes, it does.

That's a good point. And yes, I'm willing to take the risk. This is not a website where I earn money though advertising, it's a company (I own a third) that was having very good revenues and my mistake (greed) is costing us all.

wow. I say you def should try to recover that site.

like i said check your on page seo first. keep posting fresh content every week. use twitter and fb to index it fast and send daily hits to your domain....

start daily link building campaigns and use your inner pages mostly. use 80% naked urls and generic anchor texts. and start building ip diversity, i mean dont use the same sites over and over again. and most important, focus on do follow backlinks only.

Before you pay anyone some money to get your site out of penguin, i will like to advice you that it's still pretty earlier to know exactly what strategy to use to get out of this problem. Majority of people are just gallivanting and claiming what isn't just to take advantage of the situation.

Don't be too desperate or you will lose both site and money..

From what i understand by penguin, it's targeted at over optimized site and off course, Google don't want to say, how you build your link in today's SEO matters more than PENGUIN update/harm itself.

One thing i have seen people do is to analyze the bad links and have them removed or rather try to build more quality back links to neutralize it.. One downside with removing back links is, you are most likely not going to rank at where you are but if you neutralize your are likely to maintain your previous ranking or gain higher.

Secondly, check your title, description, tags and remove any excess keywords you have there. Refrain from optimizing your image at this time. Also check your content and don't exceed 2% keyword density.

Thirdly, take your back link strategy serious this time... Don't be too fast and try to be natural with quality links, SEO is no longer a game of numbers.
