A friend of mine was recently promoted to district manager at a gold & silver's buying company and he is needing to scrap the current marketing campaign they are using and start fresh. Any ideas on what promotional/marketing strategies they can use in order to increase volume through their doors?

    Thanks guys

The use of typical and old marketing methods will not pay off so much. I would recommend using mobile marketing. In addition to that online methods should also be implied.

Many would disagree, but good old fashioned bandit signs still work wonders.

    Here's another tip:

He should have one employee in each city visit garage/yard sales each Saturday. Ask the owner if they have gold to sell. Buy it on the spot.

    From experience, this works.

You could tell him to make a page on facebook and add a tab with a printout of a deal that is going on. Something along the lines of "Like us and get more $$$ for your gold."

Then you would have an aspect of people sharing the facebook page, and generating more clientele.

    Hope this helps

OP PMed you in regards to helping your friend dominate and receive another promotion.

This might be a good tip if you are going solo, but there are just too many variables involved that would not make it successful on a larger corporate type scale. Not to knock you idea but I recently sold my Gold, Silver, and Coin business and have thought of every possibility over the years and there is a real trust issue involved. You need to have your employees in a controlled environment with cameras on them at all times. Even then you need to be systematic and stay on top of your game. This is paper money and real money we are talking about, times are tough and people that get paid $12 a hour with small bonuses would get ideas when they were out on these buys. Besides why even give them the idea they could do it on their own and just sell the scrap on ebay, it often goes for over spot price when people get in a bidding war.

In my area, the precious metal buyers use bandit signs, sign spinners near their physical locations, and print ads in smaller community newspapers. All have been in business for at lease a few years, so they must be doing something right.

I agree with Flexpaydude. I was thinking the same.

Another thing he can try is ... Hook up with all instant cash loan places.
When somebody doesn't get approved...they can hand out his info.

Many of these rejects might have jewelry of some sorts. And these folks
are highly likely to sell it because of money.

If you're in a Casino state, I'd suggest your friend commission some foot soldiers to walk around a hot spot, scouting for gamblers hard-up for cash.

The demographics he'd want to tackle would be the baby boomers and low income groups, so really it's about exploring their info-mediums. I'd say talk radio ads (especially conservative radio show spots), anything related to casinos, fliers in low-income areas (the ones with pawn shops and title loan joints on every corner), or anything in line with someone experiencing one of any of the four D's:
    Death, debt, divorce, and disability.

I think you should use Facebook. If you can manage a page well, then you might get very responses form the local customers.

Another one: Connect with bail bond companies in the area. Most people head straight for the pawn shop when they need cash for bail. Let them know your company would pay more than pawn shops.

Out of curiosity, how do you people check for gold authenticity?

I think that ABC did a piece of investigative reporting once and found out that 80% of gold sold was counterfeit or of lesser purity then advertised, from what I heard, barring Xray, it is hard for even experts to detect counterfeits...

There are electronic testers that test for purity, as well as doing the old fashioned acid test.

I worked on a very similar campaign for someone last year. If he needs consultation PM me.
