If he needs cash so bad he should look into a part time job. IM can be a good way to make money, but I find you need time to read up and learn about different tactics before you can pick the one best suited to you. I guess he could try facebook, or youtube marketing those seem to be all the rage right now.
Read some tutorials on here lot of great stuff. But alternatively ask your friend to make mini sites for local businesses make them sign up through host gator affiliate or just charge them a small fee.
I'd advise him to get some good tools like senuke for a 7 day free trial. But before getting the trial, ask him to keep the content ready. Once he has the content ready, he'll be able to market fast with Senuke. Also, if you have 200 $ then also buy magic article submitter or use any of the free submitters for the time being to make money from article marketing. Pick a HOT product that has a lot of buzz around it and promote it from article directories in the resource boxes. The best spinner is also something I am trying right now along with SEnuke. Also, use isnare a lot for article marketing or even UAW if you can afford. Affiliate marketing rocks! Good luck.
