I understand ranking blogs and information sites because keywords are all over the place in your articles. I have a web design company that I'm looking to push to the top of the Serps when a customer searches for <"my city" web design>. Since the name if my city doesn't come up naturally in text on my site, and considering the fact that I don't want to limit my business to just my city... Or even my state... What's the best course of action to get this site ranking so that locals know I exist?

    things I've done:
    facebook page
    yellowpages profile
    craigslist ads

    thanks in advance bhwers

I personally would suggest a small pbn network (maybe 10-20) targeting your country customers. Also some ads in top local internet news papers and etc.

Normally, what you would do to rank a local business is to find keyword you can compete for, do proper on-page SEO, and build citations (name, address, and phone number; NAP) in local directories. This would increase your rank in the local SERPs for the location or locations your business is in (if you have multiple locations, you can target them with separate "locations" pages).

However, what you're trying to do is build a local business with a global (or national?) website, or at least one that will not be limited by geographic location. You can go the local SEO route and do everything I listed above (I recommend this if there is a ton of business that you can do in your area) if you want to target a city or multiple cities.

The other option is to get both a regular TLD and a country-code TLD, use the TLD as your main site if you have future plans to go international, and then use the ccTLD for your local SEO efforts.

@Lunatic Call gave you a good suggestion about creating a small PBN network. For local seo, you can get away with a smaller, less expensive network.
