Like Buttons - Social Media buttons - Facebook, Twitter, G+ - what is the easiest way to put them on your website without using one of those sites that does the job for you?

And what is the best target - what target should the "likes" be aimed at for SEO purposes?

There are two kinds of social buttons: the ones linking to your profiles and the ones for the users to interact with your pages (likes, +1s, tweets, etc) that create social signals.

If you don't want to use third party options, you can place the buttons by implementing the corresponding button code of each social network. For each one you'll need two elements: a little javascript resource that will make the button work and a div containing the visual button itself. Just place the script in your site's head or below the body tag and the div where you want the button to be displayed.

For usability reasons the target of the like should be the page where the button is actually implemented.

Dsan996 summed it up. By any chance, what platform are you using (Wordpress, Blogger, phpBB, etcetera)? I know for Wordpress, there are plugins you can download to do this for you (although you said you weren't interested in 3rd parties). For Blogger and other websites, you would have to place the button manually (you can download buttons or make them yourself) and then link those buttons to the code provided to you by the social network (Twitter has the code and button all in one).

If you use wordpress, there are plugins to simply your task. Otherwise, get appropriate codes from relevant social sites and implement the manually onto your pages.

I do not see a direct connection but indirect in social media likes and SEO but it might bring some social media traffic to your targeted sites.
