I'm worried that they're using some of the tools listed on this site. They are promising 2000 backlinks a week, is this possibly without blackhat methods?

It is possible if they own a network of blogs or forums, or if all of the links come from the same blogs/forums. Don't they send you a report of where the links are placed? Can you not tell by yourself if the links are whitehat/blackhat style?

Heh, I'm not in the marketing department I'm in engineering so I don't know the links(I've sent a request to see them) but I heard in our meeting the other day the stats of how fast they are creating links and it got me thinking.

It's a small local firm so I doubt they have that many blogs/forums themselves, our market guy said they are posting to directories but there are not that many directories. I'm worried because our site is very legit and 90% of our traffic is from SE so if these tactics get us banned we're f*cked.

Just check your links through Yahoo Site Explorer. Its possible to be whitehat - 2k/week are not so many, especially if they arent indexed.
And yes, there are really more 2k directories + forums + blogs and etc.

I wouldn't be concerned. They would have to be pretty blackhat to get your banned from major SE's. More on the lines of illegal. 2,000 links per week IS using some automated tool, but it doesn't mean its one that will get you banned. Submitting to mass directories wont get you guys banned, and there are thousands of smaller directories. Hopefully they can show you the links, then we/you can have a better idea whats going on.

If you are worried about damaging your "money page" then don't have someone build links to it that you don't 100% trust. You should build a buffer page i.e. squidoo and then have them build links to that page instead.

Also I wouldn't worry about the tools they use so much as they are just tools. You can use Scrapebox to spam 50k random blogs or you can manually go through each site and write a good comment. Again it just depends on the person you hired for this work.

I you're paying someone to build links for you you're already blackhat so what's the problem? Any artificial linkbuilding is blackhat IMO. THe only truly whitehat SEO comes from random people you don't know linking to you because they like you. Once you start paying for SEO its just a matter of how black you're going to be...

    Technically speaking....

any link building done for payment is blackhat.

White Hat links are made by people just thinking your site
is so great that they want to link to it.

I think we're paying a few grand a month for this service. If the links are bad(blogs, directories) would it be the same to just purchase some of those tools to do it?

A few grand per month? If your company can afford that, then either they already know what they are doing, and you shouldn't worry about it, or you should suggest they hire an outside consultant to review the companies results to see if they are worth it.

Hire someone who ONLY does consulting, not someone who does link building also or else they may try to offer you similar services for less money, and the services are still worthless.

Stick to engineering and let the IM guys work. They didn't ask you to breakdown the process. Let the powers that be do their thing.

you're spending a few grand a month on 8000 backlinks a month? You've got to be kidding. If not, you're getting totally screwed.

I would pay $10,000 per month if they were permanent, quality backlinks from high PR/high traffic related authority websites. You can not value links simply on quantity. Not everyone is going for micro niche keywords with no competition.

 You're assuming they know what they're doing. The IM guys are a one person department so everything gets outsource and this firm was suggested by a consultant and I don't trust consultants.

Exactly, thus the enquiry from me. I'm getting the full details but after reading this forum I'm convinced we're paying these clowns 100 times what it would cost to do ourselves(or hire someone on this forum to do)

im not sure if using the software on this site would make it blackhat. these tools are used by everyone in seo and i am certain your contractor uses them; that however does not mean that any ethical boundaries have been crossed - they are just tools.

legal boundaries no, ethical...ehh. Posting hundreds of unrelated(spam) comments on blogs sounds a little unethical to me. I'm not passing judgment I just don't want the company to go under because Google decided to de-index us based off some sketchy sh*t.

It all depends at with who you are dealing with exactly.
Can he show some real references?

If he actually can help you get better rankings &
your ROI is positive, why bother about what tactics he is using?

Just keep sure, that he doesn't use all these thousands of links to post them DIRECTLY to your site, rather to middle-sites or even through 2 sites in-the-middle.

How do you know they are using the tools to make unrelated spam comments. There are other ways to use these tools. Sounds like your just hatin on this guy cause hes making bank and your probably getting a hourly wage. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Also you might want to consider that they may be a member here, maybe reading this thread right now...
