That really depends on what type of classified ads, there is a lot of competition there. There are plenty of freely available scripts you can find.

Just wondering if you found any classified ad scripts. I'm looking for one too. Preferably one where I can turn payment off and on. I have a good market niche, domain and even have the basic website up just haven't found the right script, yet.

Basically I want the script to:
*Admin turn off and on payment
*Payment via Paypal for classified ads
*Admin determine cost of ads
*Map on ad to locate where item is at in town
*Ability for advertiser to place up to three photos
*Admin determine length of ads
*Admin determine how long ads show
*Free Ads 7 days == Paid Ads 14, 30, 45, 60, 90
*Featured Ad

Any suggestions?

I"m in the same boat. If there is an automated means of generating a classifieds site, I'm all ears.

I use joomla with Adsmanager extension for classifieds. I haven't started charging for ads yet, so haven't needed to install payment extension. There are a few extension options out there though (paid and free).

I haven't used it, but the newest is PaidSystem -- payment system component for AdsManager 2.2 to accept payments from customers and users via PayPal, by the makers of Admanager. Admanager is free, but PaidSystem is not.

Thanks for the tip. I've been thinking through a few angles on classifieds- perhaps city-based. I want to avoid national competition since there are so many players. Also, I figure if its local, I may be able to go direct to local businesses, and gain their involvement.

Another thought I had was to pre-populate my own classifieds site with my own offers. That way it seems like its "active" when new co's come around to see if they want to pay for ads.

Configurable directory scripts, especially the first one I listed, can be used for classified ads also. You configure the columns to say "ad title", "ad text" and so on.
