Let me start by saying I'm far from being a coder at all nor have I had the time to test this properly - came up with it last night -. In fact, I'd love to have your input on this; that's one of the reasons I'm sharing it.

As you all know, you can include ebay modules in your Squidoo lenses. These are merely lists of products from ebay appearing one above the other according to your specifications ( KWs, etc ).

However, I wondered if I could use some kind of ebay affiliate text links in my lenses outside the ebay modules, particularly ones that linked to Keword defined searches at ebay, not just single products ( for example, ebay search results for KW "iphone" ). Now, to my knowledge, you couldn't do this unless you used an EPN affiliate link or a Shoppingads link - the latter is in violation of SA's TOS ( trust me on this one, I was banned for this even though ebay seems to allow it, go figure ).

Now this is the method I came up with last night:

( It's very similar to taking the affiliate url from a banner and using it for a text link, just a little more complex )

1- Go to a lens of yours and add an ebay module as usual. ( We'll get rid of it later. There's just a part of the linking code I need you to get from there )

2- Once added, go to any of the links appearing in the module, right click on it and choose "view source". The first part ( the "root" ) should be sth like this for all the items, in all modules, inside all lenses belonging to the same member - at least they were in my case -:

    http://rover.ebay.com/rover/#/###-#...olid=#####&customid=your-lens-name-here&mpre=

    ( each "#" replaces a digit )

Take note of this root. We'll use it later.

3- Now go to ebay.com and perform a search for your desired Keyword. Copy the URL of the search. IF your KW was "iphone", the URL should be sth like

    http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=iphone&_sacat=See-All-Categories

4- Within the URL from step 3, change the following

    All ":" to "%3A"

    All "/" to "%2F"

    All "?" to "%3F"

    All "&" to "%26"

    All "=" to "%3D"

The modified iphone search should be like this:

    http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp3907.m38.l1313%26_nkw%3Diphone%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories

5- Add the modified version from step 4 at the end of the "root" from step 2, like this:

    http://rover.ebay.com/rover/#/###-#...8.l1313&_nkw=iphone&_sacat=See-All-Categories

6- Include the URL below as target for a text link of your choice, like this:

    <a href="http://rover.ebay.com/rover/#/###-#####-#####-#/#?campid=##########&toolid=#####&customid=your-lens-name-here&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.com%2F%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp3907.m38.l1313%26_nkw%3Diphone%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories">buy your cheap iphone at ebay</a>

I've tried this a few times and ebay cookies seem to be there. Squidoo seems to be counting these clicks as well - checked stats - .

You should now be able to link to ebay from within the text of your lens and stuff your cookie. Sure, Squidoo will take 50% of it as they do with links from the ebay modules...

I'd love to hear someone's input on this.

What i do is generate an rss feed through ebay, then post that in an rss module on my lens.

You can probably generate different keyword feeds and then run them through yahoo pipes to get a single feed mashup of sorts, but the problem is that you can only have 10 items in the rss module. So what i'd do if i were you is to generate multiple feeds each based on whatever keyword you want, and place each of those in their own rss module.

I've made some sales this way and can confirm that you get 100% of the earnings.

    Thanks for your input.

I believe, however, that you're missing my point. Here it is in a nutshell:

a- There are MANY people who can't get accepted into the EPN affiliate program nor are they SA affiliates - SA aff program is already closed and don't allow linking from domains that are not your own -, nor do they want to buy an EPN account - I'm one of them -.

In a way, using Squidoo ebay ads would indirectly give these people access to the ebay affiliate program ( at least when building lenses ).

b- To these people, building text affiliate links properly anchored would give them much more flexibility than just using ebay modules, as they would be able to link FROM WITHIN the content of ANY module.

    Anyone else?

As limited a solution as it appears at first, I still think it can be pretty handy for many of you strugling to get accepted by EPN. Besides, I bet the tedious part of code rewriting could be automated easily.

I'm just posting again to update on my progress. Unless there's someone else interested in this or I come up with something new regarding this subject, this will be my last post on this thread.

After 6 days of implementing this kind of links into only 1 lens, I've experienced a 15% CTR on them and I've already recieved commissions on 2 sales coming from these links for high ticket electronic products.

The way I'm using them is by building long links and including selected buying/action oriented keywords as anchor. I've seen the best results by putting these links at the beginning of the Introduction ( in other lenses much better optimized and with more targeted traffic, CTR has gone up to 50%-60% with these ). I also include similar, shorter links like these at the beginning, middle and end of other modules, without overdoing it.

Also, the first module after the Intro is a regular eBay module. When combining this module's CTR with the one from the modified links, total CTR goes up to 42%. Considering we're talking about a 7 day cookie from a place like eBay, that's pretty good imo.

Traffic is comming from Google ( only a little, as this lens was pretty much abandoned, but KWs in this case are pretty targeted ) and other web 2.0 properties - including Squidoo itself -.

I'm trying to develop other uses for this in orther to make them - and perhaps links from other modules - even more versatile.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

    Good luck to you all.
