Totally new to mobile marketing, any advice or tools on how you collect mobile numbers?

Do you build them with opt-ins like you would an email list?

What do you find are the main benefits of having a mobile list?

if you have a list of mobile numbers - you will find that almost all of them can receive SMS messages...

the nice thing about sms marketing is that the open rate is amazingly high compared to email - i heard recent numbers around 79%!

as you probably know yourself your more likely to open up a text message than you are an email... and i haven't heard of any sms spam filters "yet"!

i use sms messaging legitimately for my own clients like bars and restaurants - you can have people subscribe to your lists so they can receive sms messages about specials, coupons, events, etc - it's a great up sell to QR codes and mobile sites

since an sms message have high opening rates they are super hot for spammers right now - who are basically scraping numbers and just blasting them offers and such. This isn't something i do but i know i get hit with BS sms spam all the time its kinda annoying, specially when it hits your phone early hours of the morning!

there are several ways to send an sms message blast and they all have pro's and cons - to keep on the legal side of things in particular in the US you should really follow the guidelines set down by the Mobile Marketing Alliance - there's a post with a link to their guidelines pinned to the very first post of this Mobile Marketing Forum.

since many people don't have unlimited sms plans they may get charged for receiving your messages - and if they unsolicited and they get charged for them your probably gonna get some pissed off people!

take twitter for example i think they got hit with a lawsuit just for sending a confirmation message that you had unsubscribed from receiving any further sms messages! Whether the case got thrown out i don't know - either way there's a lot of people out there throwing legal action at spammers so if you get caught don't say i didn't warn you! :)

personally i think if your offering sms as a service to business you will probably get more residual income over a longer period time and have more opportunity to up sell more services as opposed to blasting BS sms messages to just anyone.

    Thanks for the great advice!

It was the above quoted portion of what you stated that was my biggest question: how can I collect/build a list, and then send to them?

What tools or services would I use to build a list? How do I manage campaigns for the list that I built?

I already know of all of the email marketing tools, like using AWeber and making opt-in forms, but I have no idea how to do this for SMS, or what tools to use.

    Any advice on that front?

Take a look at txt180 as an SMS provider. To get your short code and Text message credits. along with a KW. There's loads of providers just make sure you choose the right one ;)

yeah txt150.com has some reasonable pricing - $17.95 for 1000 - they use shortcode sms

just do a search for bulk sms providers theres a ton of them out there with varying prices, and white label systems, which arent particularly cheap but a lot cheaper than setting up your own shortcode!

twilio uses longcode sms - 1cents a message so for $10 you get 1000 but their platform openvbx is somewhat limited

theres a few other posts on here about pros and cons of longcodes and shortcodes both have their place so wont get into it too much here

in order to build your list most platforms offer opt in text - basically all subscriber has to do is send a keyword from their phone and it auto adds that person to the list - in some instances like my friend he does double opt-in... personally i dont think that is necessary as i am not sure how you can "fake" a telephone number... i guess the only reason i would do a double opt in is if you where using a web form to receive peoples submission

some companies offer import feature... but think they are opening themselves up for abuse if they do...

with longcodes people don't even have to send sms to signup they can actually call the longcode

well these are the legitimate ways of collecting numbers

hope that gives you a bit more direction :)

Heres a few pointers off the top of my head you may find useful!

    1) dont go paying more than 3.5 cents a message thats just crazy... as you can see txt150 is less than 2.0cents
    2) look at how much additional sms messages will cost you
    3) see if they offer roll over sms messages
    4) be wary of unlimited sms messages - they are probably not using a proper sms gateway but instead using smtp ie email to sms
    5) if your a developer you will probably want an sms api
    6) dont be put off with longcodes - i used to be but prefer them over shortcodes now
    7) if your expecting to send more than 1000+ sms at a time you maybe better of using shortcode sms instead of longcode sms - longcodes gateways usually throttle sms down to 1/sec where as shortcode its around 400/sec
    8) what's the cost of keywords, keywords dont actually cost the provider anything to setup but i have seen them as high as $15/keyword
    9) if your getting to +50k/month sms messages you may want to consider getting your own shortcode - expect to drop around minimum $10k just to get going in the first 3 to 4 months with little to zero return!
    10) if you can export your list - try too! would suck to loose all your contacts... make sure their subscribers opt in dates/times are logged
    11) *GASP HORROR* Yes READ the Mobile Marketing Alliance Best Practices - link here: http://www.mmaglobal.com/bestpractices.pdf lol
    12) be wary of fly by night start ups - do your research!
    13) see if you can get a demo of the sms platform/interface before you commit to anything
    14) Don't forget to hit thanks if this is useful to you! lol and remember think out the box, take action, make money! ;)
