How to set up an ONLINE COMMUNITY?

I want to build a small (private) online community.

What software are there available (that perhaps you've tried) that is good?

At first I was looking at vBulltein, but that is just a 'Forum'
You can't really make a community site out of it.

So I'm wondering if anyone can suggest me some software or something?

There are lots of open source cms's you can use that install quick and are solid. Just google open source cms.

alwiser, DZOIC seems to be hard to edit. I even googled different searches for it and everyone is looking for coders for that. And the coders that do know how to code it.. didn't do such an impressive job.Perhaps Im looking at some bad examples?

lonny41, can you give me a google example of CMS? My main concern is the user profiles. To have it more then just.. basic. I want like 9 images to be upload, and if you click on one of them then a lightbox pops up with that image, etc.

A small note on NING .. Do NOT use it .. When you grow and want to migrate your members all you have access to is their usernames and emails .. all other things like photos and stuff they uploaded is out of reach .. I learned the hard way .. ;-)

NING is a very bad platform to use. My 2 cents .. =)
