I'm doing seo for a business and I need to rank it for very simple keywords, but I don't know what to do since no articles are involved. Also it's the homepage that needs to be ranked. How do I go about doing this?

There is content, but it's a site for a small business. In other words, there are just no keyword targeted articles.

You do not build a billboard for a small business online, you build a presence. If you want it to rank, you have to put content on the site for SE's to analyze so they can figure out what the site is about. There is no way around this.

If this is your business, find someone who does local SEO and pay them what they want. If you are doing this for someone else, well, actually.. the same applies. If you have to create quality content out of thin air and fkluff, what they do, and where they do it, that's what you have to do. And it must be optimized thin air and fluff, too.

Search engines will look at the page, decide what it is about as best they can, and rank your for phrases they think apply. You have to supply them the words to analyze, period, unless you want to rank behind everyone who does it even remotely right.

Want me to do it for you?

i dont understand.... if you are doing seo for someone else, you are supposed to know what to do....However...
well first of all you need content. And its better if its unique. If you are building links, what ever kind of links, no matter if the company is big or small, you need to build links embeded into content... so i suggest you start by writing 3 articles, and posting them at PR, article directories, social networks, social bookmarks, signing in to forums.... there are many things to do, but you will need work on content first

Don't go spinning articles for small businesses, if someone actually reads the spun crap it reflects badly on the business owner and those links are crap. if you do forums make sure they relate to the business.

Local SEO is not normal nationwide SEO, and a far cry from IM SEO.

    Easy breezy!

    1) Optimize all web page content. This should be done NATURALLY. Don't count keywords, don't count page word count. Just provide clear, relevant content (engaging content) and the target keywords should already be used naturally.
    2) Optimize the meta title, meta description, URL (long URLs are better) and headers.
    3) Since this is a small business, you have an advantage of narrow demographics. Use local search phrases (i.e. bakeries in {town}).
    4) Claim local business listings on Google Local (formerly Google places), Yahoo! Local and Bing local. Customize each listing with pictures, hours, correct location, special offers, etc.

You don't need articles to rank a small business, but press releases can help too. In any case, the local listings are usually key and very effective, depending on how many local competitors are in the same industry.

You can generate content without having blog articles.
There should be plenty to say about the business, storefront, owners, products, services, etc. Generate good "about" sections and make pages for their products or services. This is a good way to build content without having to post blog articles regularly.
If you want a good place to put articles, consider writing general content about their industry. Put all this together and you should have a comprehensive site that will not only be able to rank, but drive customers to their business.

Try to put your content with keyword as many as possible in some pages like about-us, contact, FAQ, summary in homepage ....
Remember to put keyword in H1, H2, H3 tag.
Then do the link building, if it is a very simple keyword like you said, that is enough to rank
