How to Sell Your Ebook if You Actually Want to Make Decent Money from It Source: Unknown Books/ebooks are how you get started as an infopreneur. Earlier, I used to think there were 3 main ways to get your words out there: land a book deal, self-publish a physical book, or self-publish an ebook on distributor sites like Amazon. This post isn't going to address #1 and #2 above. Instead, I'm going to focus on #3: ebooks. Many people think that since Amazon holds over 80% of the ebook industry's sales, that putting their book up there is enough. People browsing for reading materials will see it and, ta da, in rolls the passive income. Here's the thing about the Amazon Kindle store (and similar sites): it is a marketplace. Your product is posted alongside thousands of others. The result? A price race to the bottom. Why do you think so many ebooks are 99 cents? And remember, Amazon doesn't invest in driving new traffic to your product. It might even recommend other products to those shoppers considering yours. The end result is maybe a few sales a month, if your ebook gets some good reviews. I don't know about you, but $5/mo, even if it is passive, isn't going to support my lifestyle! Luckily for us infopreneurs, there is a 4th option: selling an ebook as a PDF on your own website. Doing it this way: Allows you to charge more for your work, Does not pit you against competitors on the same website, Positions you as "an expert with a book" rather than just one of many trying to make a sale, and, ultimately, Converts way higher than waiting for sales on a marketplace does. So let's explore this method: First, I'm not just recommending you post your book as a product people can buy outright. You can do that, but you won't be able to employ urgency and scarcity, which is key. Instead, I recommend a trip wire funnel with an authentic countdown timer: Use a lead magnet to attract your ideal audience. Don't make an ebook since that's what you want them to buy next. Use a checklist or something smaller. After they opt in, take them to an order form page which acts as both an order form page and a sales page. Definitely use a video on here if you can! Present your ebook offer, telling your audience that this jam-packed resource is the 'next step' to making progress....and its only $17! (or whichever price you choose). Ask them to buy...but wait! They need to do so in the next 20 minutes to grab this price**. If they don't buy before the timer on the page expires, the price goes up forever. And guess what? They can't get this ebook anywhere else: it's not even on Amazon! (If you did want to list your book on Amazon, don't say that last bit, but make sure you do sell it there for the higher price.) Add an upsell after your ebook to an online course or similar! This is such a perfect upsell because you can position it as the "companion video course to your ebook". (Remember also, you don't have to call it an ebook if you don't want to. "Roadmaps", "blueprints", "guidebooks" are often viewed as more valuable!) Take them to the order confirmation page where they can instantly download their PDF with the click of a button (use CF's 'digital assets' feature). If you did have an ecourse upsell, put the book in that membership area as well for good measure. **I accomplish the authentic fast action timers with Deadline Funnel, but you can also use FOMO funnels if you have Actionetics MD. Can't wait to hear how this method works for you, too!
