I prefer using Google Adwords. After searching for a keyword using their keyword tool, you can view the search popularity of the keyword by looking at the "average monthly searches" section.

Use google keyword planner to see how many searches a keyword receives. You can also use google trend and see how the keyword is performing.

If you want to find another keywords for you site, you can use Pastukhov Keyword Databases. I know that it's very big keyword database.
