Hello everyone and I hope you're doing great. I've always used the Google KeyWord Tool to research my keywords but I've never done KeyWord research to see the amount of searches a particular keyword gets in a city/town. I don't see this option available in GWT and am looking for a way to do this. How can I see the amount of searches that a KeyWord gets in a particular city? Thanks and any help would be appreciated! :)

This is how you would do it.

Sign in to your google account. Then sign up for adwords if you haven't.
Don't worry you won't pay anything.

Then under Tools and analysis, go to traffic estimator.
There click on the pencil icon next to location. Enter the city you want to search the volume for.
Then click add. Also make sure you remove the country from location. Example, I'd add Chicago...but
I'd remove United States. That way you only get search volume for Chicago not the whole US.

Then enter your keyword as exact match(eg.[Keyword]) in the box below. Or..you can upload a spreadsheet.

    Click on Get Estimates.

Then, in cpc box, enter something like $10 and daily budget like $200 or something.

You'll see the estimated clicks and impressions.
Since we are doing seo...so we're only concerned with impressions.

Now...take this info with grain of salt. Google traffic estimator has improved over the years.
But don't just rely on the numbers this tool spits out.

I hope this helps you find out the search volume of what you're looking for.

So whats the difference between using traffic estimator vs. keyword tool? Why do people prefer to use keyword tool for keyword research and not traffic estimator? Thx

Keyword tool is more mainstream. It'll give you keyword ideas and search volume and bunch more stuff like cpc etc.
But it doesn't give you city/state search volume. It's just for country based numbers.

Plus...in keyword tool, you might have noticed, most of the search volume gets rounded.
It's always rounded something like 260, 390, 1600, 1900 etc. In reality, we all know that
each term will have a different search volume instead of rounded one.

This is where traffic estimator comes in.
Traffic estimator is aimed at paid advertiser, but gives you more
granular search volume. Again...keep in mind, it is a traffic estimator.
It's not going to show you keyword ideas. Just estimated traffic volume of what you put in.

    I hope this helps!!

I have been playing around with the traffic estimator this morning and find it quite useful. As you mentioned above, the CPC field needs to be filled in order to determine how much traffic you will get, and of course I knwo this tool is mainly for PPC not SEO.

However, to get the best estimate, should we put $100 max per click etc.? So that the estimated traffic volume is what we get when we rank #1? Thx

I am also curious to know if changing max per click gives better results.

You can put whatever you want in cpc. More the better...for both the cpc and budget.
Yes $100 or so per click will give you top result data.

But.....that data is for ppc. Now if you're doing ppc, you'll get estimated clicks---if you're in top positions.
This is not for seo top result. For seo purpose we are only after impression numbers.

I know for seo, some numbers been floating around for few years.
It's like...number one position gets 42% or so. I could be wrong on this. You can search this forum.
I think there are bunch of factors like your title...that may change click thru rate.

Using the KW tool, use different versions of the same thing
Using Provo Utah Massage I would look at this
    Massage Provo
    Massage in Provo
    Massage in Provo UT
    Provo Massage
    Provo UT Massage
    Massage Therapy in Provo UT

For my city people put the service first then the city, more often.

That's true as well. I think if the 'city name' or 'location' is included in the query, using keywordtool is pretty much same result.

Right but using the "exact" tool will give you real idea of what you can expect should you rank well. In my city for massage it let me know that there are about a thousand searches a month. It wont make me bank but I will use a previously owned domain to make a few hundred a month.
