So here's the deal, I have a hosting account on Hostgator, I've had it for over a year.

It's the baby croc whatever plan, so I can supposedly have as many sites as possible. Okay.

Now, how can I create more sites without buying any more domains?

Actually, I mostly want to create some whatever site to play with a little, try themes, try plugins, and things like that. But I'm quite inexperienced with the cPanel/Hosting/Domains stuff, and quite frankly, a bit intimidated when it comes to SQL and PHP and all that...

So anyway, how do I go about doing this?

    Thanks

You can make all of the sub domains you want. That would be an easy way to go about it. They will all be free.

Set up a subdomain and mess around with some of those things. You can set it to not be indexed and it would be a nice way for you to learn a little.

Maybe I have a wrong understanding of the word Subdomain.

Isn't that just a subdomain to my main site. So if my main site is called: mysite.com, then the subdomain will be, say, mysub.mysite.com?

And if that's the case, I'd rather not. I'd like to make a site that's not related to my main website in any way (except maybe whatever IP address of hostgator that's assigned to my sites or whatever else technical like that).

Not because I'll be doing anything shady, I just don't want my main website to be connected in any way to the test site.

If you don't want to use a subdomain, then google search for a free tk domain
Sign up for a new tk domain, but don't buy their hosting since you'll be using your current hosting.
You then want to point your name servers (NS) on your tk account to your HG account. To find out your HG name servers, sign in to your HG cpanel and scroll all the way down. On the left side you'll see your HG name servers. There will be 2 of them. These are what you'll want to add (both of them) to your tk account in the nameservers area.

Now, in your HG cpanel, go to the area named Domains and click on Addon Domains. Add your tk domain there.

Now in your HG cpanel, use softaculous/QuickInstall to install wordpress to your addon tk domain. It should automatically create a new mysql database. After it's installed, you might have to wait 10 minutes or so to access your new site.

    Next steps optional:
What you could do after that is go to your existing wordpress site (the one you're using now), install the plugin wp-clone, and create backup. I recommend downloading this backup to your hard drive just in case the next step goes wrong, you can easily restore your current site. Right click and copy the location of the backup.

Now go to your new wordpress site just created (your tk) and also install wp-clone. Right click and paste the location of the backup from the site backup you just created (your other site) and click restore. You'll now have a copy of your other site that you can test with, try different themes, whatever.

This might sound like a lot of work but it should only take 15 minutes or so to do everything.

Well, that's the answer I was looking for basically. Thanks @ZBf5vQTGshZ5ZeKUspAO

However, I tried the .tk official site and Freenom, and none of them work for me. I reach the point where I request that they re-send the registration email, and then when I go insert the Confirmation code, I get an error that says: "You have entered incorrectly."

So, I can't use these, and I tried multiple times. So what now? I guess I'll look for some other sites that offer free domain names...

Well, somehow I managed to login, but using my Facebook account, which I hate. I would've preferred to register using an email and password, but I wasn't able to do that, it wouldn't work. So I registered using my Facebook account...

And for some strange reason, even if I go to .tk's official site and try to sign in, it still redirects me to Freenom for some reason...

Are Freenom and the .tk official site in some sort of agreement or something?

    Well, I've created the site.

It seems that it's still a sub-domain, even though I created it as an addon domain.

So it seems the site can be accessed from 3 different URLs because of this, but according to Hostgator documents it seems that the search engines know and will only index the main domain - which in this case is mysite.tk - and they won't index the subdomain, which is something like mysite.myoriginalsite.com

This still worries me a little, having 2 or more sites sort of "interlinked," or "connected" like that. But, it is what it is...

First off, I'm really not sure the agreement, if any, between freenom and tk
I just knew you can get free tk domains, so I used that as an example. But it seems you got it working. From here on out you shouldn't even have to login to the freenom or tk site ever again, unless you want to renew that domain when it expires. Next time, if your only choice to login to a site is the facebook thing, always remember you can just create a new fake name/bogus facebook account to use just for stuff like that.

To prevent search engines from indexing your site, go to your wordpress Settings/Reading and put a checkmark in Discourage search engines from indexing this site
Alternatively, you can edit your robots.txt file with no follow no index rules, or use a plugin.

I really don't see how your new domain is considered a subdomain- for example if your original site was originalDOTc0m and your new site is test tk, you can access your site by typing testDOTtkDOToriginalDOTc0m? (my post is triggering the post moderation system here so I had to type it awkwardly like that)

I've used (and still use) HG with a few different domains and a few subdomains and never experienced this. Although your account name is usually the same as your main domain. So your new domain would be listed after your account name (main domain name), if that makes any sense.

    Thanks for the tips.

I already have a secondary facebook account, although I used my real one for logging in. I mean, why not...

As far as making the site noindex, I could, but there's no need to do that. Let them index it, whatever...

Well, it sort of is a sub-domain. Here, this should explain things better than I can:
    http://support.hostgator.com/articles/cpanel/please-read-before-creating-an-addon-domain

And here's a discussion on this domain/sub-domain thing:
    http://forums.hostgator.com/subdomain-vs-addon-domain-t1573.html?

Now, it seems that there's no problem with this, as long as you never share your other URLs which can be used to access your new site. Honestly, I'm uncomfortable with this, and I wish there was a way to have 1 Name per site, and that there is NO other way to access the site except by using that 1 name.

But, there's nothing I can do about it, unfortunately...
