I had a pr7 site which was penalized by google for selling links. My site is pr3 now. How can I recover my old pagerank? I have searched on google but haven't found anything on this topic.

yes..you have to move. But,if you persist.Try to remove all the link you sell. Then, analyse your external backlink.Try to remove bad backlink first.

    Page rank penalty.

This is the Google standard penalty where in the text all they talk about is "attempting to game Page rank" which is a strange thing to say as I'm not aware of anyone who gives a feck about Page rank any more.

If they said "attempting to game SERPS"...then fair enough
    But Pr? Seriously?

Anyway, this is what I'm doing on one of my sites and how it's progressing. It's NOT a quick process. Think months not days or weeks.

How a bad backlinks is recognized ?
Using Google Webmaster Tools I can get a list with all domains that links to me. The PR0 are bad backlinks ?

    Appreciate your reply.

If you have a manual action on your webmaster tools, I can maybe point you in the right direction.

PR goes up and down whenever they please, they suck a lot, just like Google's algorithm.

My white-hat sites, never use any black-hat tricks also get demoted from PR 4 to PR 3 in the last update, although the site is frequently updated with newest articles.
On the other hand, a site that is never used and only acts as a landing page gets PR 4.
    PR algorithm sucks also.

No, there is no manual actions on my webmaster tools, but my website fall down from +300 UV/day to less than 30/day. And my unique explication for this is a lot of backlinks that I never ordered in many domains with PR0.
    P.S. Is a EMD.
If you have any solution please help.

    Thanks

Then bad links are likely - or if it happened earler maybe others sites were more "hummingbird" friendly.

There are lots of factors that decide whether a link is bad. The post I linked to lists most of them.

Google webmaster tools doesn't show you the backlinks content, you can see only the domain name and the numbers of backlinks. Is there any free way to find out all backlinks to your website ? Of course, including the article content too.

webmaster tools shows you backlinks discovered by google. You can download them into a csv file.

I have a similar situation with a site of mine. Can you setup a new domain name and place a 301 direct on the compromised site ?

recover the old domain first, as otherwise you will transfer the penalty to your new domain

this is one thing that most people dont understand. they say "who cares about pr" but if your business is built around it then you do give a fuck.

it does sound exactly like a pr penalty for selling links. PR7 to PR3 is unusual. Usually you will see a progression of PR over time.

I dont think there is much you can do. Maybe remove the sold lnks and wait it out. I believe I heard that Google doesnt penalize for selling links forever but it does have a set "time" penalty. I believe it is something like 1 yera or more if its blatantly abused.

You can use majestic seo free account- verify your domain and you'll be able to create a free report which will show up to 500 backlinks.

What you do next depends on why you think you have a PR penalty- if you think it's because you sold links, then remove links and consider a manual review.

If you think the penalty is because of bad links to your site, then maybe remove any backlinks which have a low trust/ citation flow ratio ( eg <0.75).

If you didn't get any notification in WMT then it may be hard to know the cause. Either way, PR won't be updated this year in all likelihood so you probably won't have an answer for some time. Your PR might have dropped for other reasons, like someone removing their links to you or removing a redirect which was falsely inflating the original PR.

PR 7 is pretty damn high and it makes you wonder if it was a genuine PR 7 to begin with- if you check your own backlink profile you would expect to see some PR8 and PR 7 backlinks with some PR 6 backlinks too- of you don't have those backlinks in your profile then at least you know that your PR has gone down based on backlinks rather than a penalty.
