My background is SEO, if you ask me how to rank a website in a low/mid competition niche, the method that simply works is:
> Having perfect onsite SEO;
> Create sitewide backlinks in high DA websites.

With this you can 100% rank in Google.

Now my question is, what's the method that really works to rank a video in a low/mid competition niche on YouTube?
I've done some research on BHW and there's people that swear by the HR views method and others that say that's outdated.
I need to know what is working right now and not what worked in 2018.

As others pointed out, high retention views and engagement are helpful to give YouTube a push in measuring your videos metrics. With that said, your video MUST be engaging. If people click on your result in organic search, and drops off after 20 seconds, you're never going to rank it. That's the reality.

Time, you don't need HR views, subscribers, likes. You just need time. I tried some cheap and expensive alternatives. Although some of them work, it's not worth the money.
What do you mean by time? Retention rate is how long viewers watch the video (engagement signals), but I agree on the subscribers part. The only thing that you should focus on is ranking videos on keywords people are looking for. If your video has a low retention rate (engagement) it won't stick around in the top results for long, for competitive keywords at least.

Meaning that people starting youtube should have the patience to wait at least 1 year before they can see results. The big problem I see in these new YouTubers, they try to post 10 videos and wonder why they don't get 100k views on each. It's 2021, not 2011 anymore. Patience is the key here.

Thus - you need longer, intriguing content
which leads us to the good old "content is king"
remember youtube is owned by google ?

same crap that works for google (long, good quality articles) will work on yt (long, good quality vidoes)
thats it.

If you're not overly famous in social media or doesn't have that much money to spend, you may try the following.

First Phase:

1. Use microworkers + mobile only.
2. Advise you will give a guaranteed bonus if they can follow all your instructions:
a. Let them screenshot their watch time for the day before watching your video.
b. Watch entire video. Like vid, comment related to the kw/title and subscribe. Share to their 2 dif social media accounts, must be public.
3. Let them send a screenshot of their watch time on the account after watching the video.
4. Asked for their email/fb so that you can directly contact them for your next upcoming tasks. They can send it as a SS maybe?

- The main problem with these microworkers sites is that most people won't really watch your entire video. Tried doing some tasks myself by just scrolling past to the end of the video, ss and did the subs like share and comment, still got paid for it. So, that's the common problem.

- As a resolution, I provided a step above. First phase is not mainly promoting a video, but rather "mining good 1st-level microworkers" that understands and able to follow the tasks.

Second Phase:

1. Check the submitted tasks, filter those that are able to follow everything. It might not be that much, but definitely there are people out there that are doing things as you instructed.

2. Contact them. Let them invite their friends, family or anyone that they personally know that can follow the same easy tasks. Depending on your budget, you can provide extra bonuses to these 1st-level microworkers. Or think of a referral program maybe for everyone.

3. Let your 1st-level microworkers do the hiring process for you. Tell your 1st-level microworkers that all of their invited people must undergo a test to make sure that they will do and follow the task as instructed.

4. Let the 1st level provide these steps to the prospects as a test. Same as finding the 1st level microworkers, you'll have the ff:

a. Use mobile youtube app, SS watch time for the day before watching your vid.
b. Look up your vid in youtube by searching for the keyword + thumbnail + youtube channel.
c. Watch entire video, comment like sub nd share.
d. SS total watch time after watching vid.
e. Send proof to your email for the "hiring".
f. Advise they will be added to an fb group chat if they are hired.

5. Create a facebook group chat. Here, include your 1st level and the "prospects who followed every steps and got hired".

6. Depending on your budget, you can have like 100 people as a start. If this is your initial limit, then tell them to stop inviting once you reach that number. Check if how these 100 reliable people are able to help grow your channel and rank your videos.

Third Phase:

1. By this time, you'll provide the exact tasks to your reliable team of 100, of course you provide the rules. Failure to follow 1 step, will be removed from the group.

a. All members should be subscribed to your channel by now but let them hit the bell button.

b. Upload your next vid and all 100 should be watching it on their mobile YT app as soon as they see the notif.

c. Same old process, SS before and after watching, watch vid, like comment and share to their social media. You may let these members join atleast 3 niche related fb groups then add task by letting them share your newly uploaded videos. Then send proof to your hiring email. Subject line depends on you for that specific video.

d. Check for the proofs and make payments to anyone who followed your steps. If someone missed a step, try to message it on your fb group. If person still fails to comply, kick from the group and state the reason. In that way, all the other members are aware that the person got removed because of a valid reason.

e. Check the growth on your channel, if it's positive, then hire for more.

P.S.
This was my initial plan and I'm not able to implement it because of funds.

With this process, it's more like you have 100 actual fans/followers that supports you, only difference is that they are being paid to do it.

The only way to find out is to test the options yourself. There are some comparison sites, but they earn money from the traffic as affiliates, which is fine, but that also means you can't always trust the actual results based on their ranking on their website, as they obviously want to optimize their earnings, but it's a good starting point.

There's some good tips on this thread already, to help others learn how to rank your videos, and understand the ranking factors these days. It hasn't been about the view-count for many years now, but rather the engagement signals (retention rate) etc.

I said this a few times, but if people drop off your video after 10-20 seconds, YouTube knows your content sucks, and they won't promote (rank), or recommend it.

The main factor with ranking isn't SEO. It's about the recommendations/homepage. So you need good CTR from those traffic sources, especially from subscribers. I've seen channels die because their CTR% from upload is very very low.

Wut mate? You don't get featured on the homepage with 0 views. Video SEO is still important, but where most people fail is with their video retention rate (engagement). If you upload a video where people click off after 10 seconds, then YouTube is not going to pick it up and promote (rank) it.

Don't know man, I guess it depends on what you're trying to do. If you aim to rank on keywords that big players are already established on, and can't match their video quality etc. then you might wanna reconsider your approach - such as focusing on long tail keywords instead.

Genuine content that provides value, and keeps viewers engaged is the key to succeed on YouTube. If you want to promote your video manually, sure it may take a while to see results, but there's some good paid options to boost your video with high retention views and engagement, to enable YouTube to measure your videos metrics.

But again, if your content still fails to be engaging, the rankings won't stick around for long. Patience goes for anything, but working smart, and understanding the ranking factors typically brings faster results.

YouTube's interested in one thing: Keeping users on their platform for as long as possible. If your content does not keep viewers engaged, YouTube will not promote it. As simple as that. :p

There's no best provider at the moment as Youtube always makes frequent updates. Create your own custom bot
