I'm glad you clicked this, it means you're interested in the shortcut to ranking on Google.
    And that's your problem.

When I build a website with the intention of ranking on page 1, I'm already prepared to work 3-5 months before seeing that result.
Hours and often days go into finding the right keywords before buying a new domain. If you're trying to rank keywords on a whim, you will fail 99.9% of the time. Even if you can rank without research, you'll soon discover you spent more money and time than the keyword was worth. ie; $700 to rank a $50 a month keyword.

How many people do you know who've achieved their fitness goals within a week? Healed a massive injury in days?
Your body is incredibly powerful yet it takes months/years to see many results appear.
I guarantee everyone you've ever heard SEO Is Dead from have tried building a site, throwing some links at it for a couple days and their rankings dropped/danced concluding that SEO doesn't work. These same people have a habit of checking their traffic/ranking on an hourly basis instead of weekly.

Take this home with you: Setup a routine and see it through. Just because you're not #1 now doesn't mean you aren't getting there.
The only keyword you will EVER immediately rank for is your own company name. If SEO was immediate - you'd be outranked every minute. Be grateful for patience.

And what would you recommend doing in that 3-5 months?

    - Link building
    - Adding content to those sites

    Am I missing anything?

The last two lines from OP are real gems. I do agree that SEO is a process and though there are some shortcuts they don't last for long.

Setup a routine- so so important. Don't try to rid of bad habits. Make new good habits. Good habits replace bad habits.

Great post OP and I totally agree with you. I think a lot of poeple miss out on success because they will see no results after 1-2 months and start to decrease the amount of effort and time they are putting in, thinking its not worth while.

If you want to target and rank "xyz" keyword and you don't put the "xyz" keyword as an anchor text. Then consistent in link building... maybe you will see the result... your site get ranked at the first page without putting anchor text "xyz" in all backlinks. This happens sometimes.

Content first, backlinks second. I'd (personally) suggest more optimized content over backlinks since a fuller website looks better to Google. You can churn and burn with less content and boatloads of backlinks - I don't judge.

Just this asshole right here. :)
You know I do it out of wuv.

    lmao
Have you learned nothing? Essentially nothing in SEO is dead, just use common sense when gaming the system. Google wants natural 'looking' links so build links with that in mind, randomize that shit on occasion. Again; churn and burns seem to fullout abuse overly-optimized anchors and bank nicely for 1-3 months.

At first You need to add the unique content tot your website .
Than create good backlinks from high PR sites with low OBL .

I totally agree with the SEO part, but I disagree with the "body" part.

To avoid discussions, working on seo for the long term is the way to go nowadays. ;)

    Edit:

I think I will take your "weekly check stats" approach now. THough I watch daily serps, traffic, earnings etc. I think it will be interesting to see those stats every saturday morning :)

Hehe it will be interesting and it will be a temptation xD

Guess I'll have to disable emails when I get a lead xD

    EDIT #2:

Though I've seen new sites rank in top10 within 2-3 days after getting indexed, I think building sites for the long term is the way to go. These blazing fast ranking sites can bring some extra cents but in teh long run, my authority sites will triumph :)

It took nearly 6 months to clear my skin, it was painful to wait for results but they finally came. That's an example of body vs. SEO, or anything in life.

Checking stats daily isn't worth your time in the beginning, they tend to cause people to give up when they don't immediately see 5000 visits on day one.
Sites that rank quickly generally belong to previously successful IM'ers, they've got PBNs in place and much more cash than you. Beginners need to know these results are not going to happen for them right away. Churn and burn is also not to be mistaken for a competitor for the longterm, they'll die within 3 months max.
I say choose your goal and work toward it; go churn and burn OR build a lifetime income earner. Just remember the difference.

Your body has nothing to do with SEO.

After Penguin 3.0 ranking in few days is easier than before.
