In my experience it is very hard to beat these guys in the rankings. In my experience I've often found it more productive to ride their coattails instead of trying to outrank them. This won't work on every site but does for Yahoo Answers, YouTube, Quora, and many blogs.

The trick is to post some relevant content on those sites that link back to your site that (hopefully) has additional and helpful information. It is most typically in the form of a comment. I did this tactic once for a multi-day event calendar I wrote. I'd visit other blogs that ranked well for event calendar-type keywords and leave a comment that talked about how if you needed a calendar capable of handling events that spanned multiple days then you would need to go to the url I gave them to get a better solution.

Amazon, yahoo answers and wikipedia are very easy to beat. I mean..like.. I don't even have to outrank Yahoo Answers, if there is a regular question in my way(not from a brother IMer) I simply report the question to deletion and I get it out of the SERPS. To outrank the other 2 backlinks will do just fine.

They are generally easy to beat mate, except wikipedia in most cases. It's in fact a common conclusion that if you notice them for a certain key phrase, it's easy to rank for. If you are finding it hard to overrank them, you need some poweful backlinks I'd say. :)
