Hi there, how can I rank for a competitor's brand?

I want to rank for his name, and for his keywords. When someone searches "Brand A" of course now they get his website. But I want my website to be top result for his brand (Brand A). Even if I can't be top result for his brand name, I would like to be the second result at least.

In general, how do you accomplish this? Do I create content on my website comparing my brand name to his brand name? Do I use his brand as anchor text in links to my site?

Yes absolutely, you have to use your competitor brand name in your website content and then you have to build links using your competitor brand name as anchor along with few longtails.

It is very possible, but it may not be worth it, I could see using this kind of tactics getting your website nseo'ed off your competitor.

Well I would like to do it and do it "white hat". What is a good way to use my competitor's name on my website? Product comparisons? Advantages of my product vs. his? Are there other "legitimate" or "white hat" ways of using his brand name on my website?

    No. Why would I?

Like I said in the original post, when someone searches for my competitors brand, I want my brand to show up near the top. I'm not talking about negative SEO. I'm talking about getting my brand associated with his, so when people look for his brand, they find my brand as an alternative.

I thought one way is to do a product comparison page on my site. That way, it mentions his brand name, thus creating an association between the two brands.

If you sell Chevrolet cars, wouldn't you want "Chevy" to show up when someone searches for "Ford"?

    negative seo :D

This comparing thought is a good idea but remember, if you talk how good you are and how bad your competitor is then you are not going anywhere :)
