    Alright,

I have a client that wants me to build an authority site for them. However, their primary search term that they want to rank for has 5 million exact (quoted) search results and 346 million (non-quote) search results. I understand that backlinks will help, but I do not want to treat this as a get it to the top (and hope Google doesn't slap me).

I feel that we should offer the following:

    1. On Page SEO:
    • Proper Titles For Each Page
    • Proper H1, H2 and H3 Headings
    • Deep Linking Throughout The Website

    2. Off Page SEO
    • Submitting To All Major Search Engines
    • Submitting To All Major RSS Feeds
    • Content Relevant Forum Posting (Not Spam Comments, Actual Comments Meant To Help The Reader)

    3. Backlinks
    • Try To Find Link Partners In Same Niche (Not A Competitor)

    4. Content
    • Focus On Creating Content (LSI Keywords) That Push To The Primary Keywords
    • Making Sure A New Post, Comment, Etc... Is Posted Each Day

What else do you guys recommend? How long do you think it would take to rank this site in the Google Top 10 results? The other domains have been registered for 10+ years and this will be a new domain. Thanks guys for all your input.

    #2-

This doesn't even matter. You're ranking for some extremely huge keyword term - manual blog commenting and RSS feeds are going to do diddly squat.

    #3-

Unless your link partner is the Google.com homepage, you're going to have to spend quite a lot of time with this approach. Maybe if you can organize 50,000 link partners like the major porn sites you'll have success.

    #4-

This is really your only way to have success with your SEO plan - hope your content is good enough that other people link to it. Considering most of us have never received a legitimate backlink from another person (think about it - do any of your sites actually have even one "real" backlink?), good luck on that one.

I think you can target this industry, but if you ever really want to rank for the top keywords you're going to have to get your "authority" beforehand. With this sort of linking strategy in what appears to be a tough niche, you're going to need the boost from other people linking to your content.

Get featured in news websites, a guy looking for that term should be paying you 15k/ month. Use that budget to buy expensive info graphics and then have them distributed on a lot of different websites.

Get guest blogs features on big sites in your niche.

Use helpareporter.com to get into big websites.

Do press releases with real content and then try to get big website to feature your story.

Donate money to colleges and ask them to give you a link to your site in return.

These type of links should all come along with a massive social campaign on Facebook twitter and YouTube where you will try to make viral content.

    Good luck

#1 The site needs to be an authority site. If you want to rank for a 5M KW than you better have a serious site not some 15 page mini site.

#2 is a waste of time

#3 don't get link partners. Reciprocal links if that's what you're thinking are not a good idea.

Is this a 5M search term or 5M sites that Google lists for that term? Big difference. 5M searches is huge. 5M search results doesn't mean shit.

I would suggest you first analyze your competitors thoroughly. Check on ahrefs, opensiteexplorer etc. the first 20 - 40 results and you will get a feeling of what you have to do.

Without knowing the competition any suggestion is just a "shot in the dark" :)

sorry but I don't know why everyone is thinking a keyword with 5 million exact results is a hard keyword, you can't judge the competition on just volume alone, for all we know it could be 5 million crap sites with poor SEO or 5 million sites that are really competing with each other. You don't even know how many are competing with each other, to get a better look at the competition use market samurai or something.

Within a few months I was number 1 for a keyword with 75,000,000 exact results, it doesn't mean I am a wizard at SEO because I think the competition wasn't that hard.

On-page SEO will help you, but you don't have to have the best, just the basics. make sure the site has a lot of content.

for off page seo all you are doing is getting rss backlinks (mainly only used for indexing), blog comments (not much value) and finding link partners? that is not enough. make some quality web 2.0 blogs, doc shares, high pr profiles, social bookmarks, high pr wiki's. then just backlink to them to make them have more quality. limit it to about 10-20 tier 1 backlinks a day but you can go crazy on your tier 2 +, don't ever stop the backlinking keep it constant, if you suddenly stop for a week and then just start up again building lots of links it might get a little bit penalised for suspicious link building.

The number of search results is not really a good indicator of how hard a keyword is. Infact it is useless.

For instance there could be only 20 results for a keyword but every one of them is PR 5+ with 100,000 backlinks. You would have a very tough time trying to get to page 1.

On the other hand there could be 5 million search results but the top 10 spots are taken up by PR n/a sites with zero backlinks. You could probably rank in a couple of days.

    Search results doesn't mean shit.

Why not let us know how many searches your keywords get? Or better still use traffic travis or long tail pro or something to analyse the top 10 and post it here?

Black Hat World --- well the domain name pretty much makes a lot of since...

To begin with, you can't build an Authority website. Not only are you blind per what Google justifies as an Authority website, but it would take years to even begin to be respected as an authority. I'm just curious, are you intending on doing this with your blackhat ninja methods?

Well that's not going to end well.

5 million exact and you're plan includes "Submitting To All Major Search Engines"?

http://www.billhartzer.com/pages/search-engine-submission-now-officially-a-scam/ Read that, or Google "search engine submission scam".

Your backlink plan is "finding link partners in the same niche"? Reciprocal links are not that incredible to begin with, but what exactly are you going to do if nobody in the same niche wants to trade links?

RSS submissions, don't bother. Search engines will find the site on their own if you do even the slightest "proper" SEO to the site.

And you're doing this on a brand new website vs 10 year old sites?

Eventually you're going to be looking at an unhappy client who will discontinue using your services. Really don't mean to sound snarky, but that's the way it is.

#1. On-page SEO and all that: IMPORTANT. DO IT.
    #2. Forget it.
    #3. Waste of time.
#4. Unique, original, high-quality content: MOST IMPORTANT.

Now, to rank on Big G, if you're in it for the long haul. Here are a few counter-intuitive SEO tips, in brief:

    1. Build a powerful Facebook presence. Build/buy a FB page with 1,000,000 members and a gazillion likes. Build it, grow it, nurture it. Make sure you get tons of traffic from it.

    2. Create a massive YouTube presence. Ensure you get humongous traffic from it.

    3. Build/buy an authority Twitter account (at least 1,00,000+ followers). Keep it very active and engage your followers. Ensure you get tons of RTs every day.

    4. Create a massive LinkedIn presence (it's not that difficult, actually). Get massive traffic from it.

    5. Don't underestimate the power of Yahoo! answers. Buy a YAnswers traffic service, or create accounts on your own and post questions and answer them. Get lots of traffic.

So let's say you do this all and get tons of traffic consistently from the above 5 methods. When your traffic starts flowing, naturally Big G will come sniffing. When it sees that you have have good on-page SEO, and have unique, original, high-quality content, it will put your site on probation - on a watch-list - for a few months.

After a certain number of months (6/9/12 - depends), if you keep churning out unique, high-quality content and if your traffic keeps flowing, you'll wake up one day and see your site on page 1/2 or thereabouts. Bravo!! Your site is now recognized as an authority site!

That's when you go in for the kill. Research the B-S-Ts carefully and select the BEST service (or couple services) you can find. A couple hundred bucks well spent at this stage could well give you top spot or thereabouts.

    Good luck!

Here is a screen capture, with the keywords blurred out (of course). As you can see, there are six keywords that the client really wants to rank for. Some high, some low (all high competition).

LOL, I'll totally go NINJA on it. Actually, I was hoping to keep the majority of my work white hat. After it has been up for a little time, I was hoping to use a BST package or two here to help it out.
