So, lets talk about a way I defeated the 'odds'

People once told me I couldn't rank an EMD (exact match domain) for its trending keyword within 2 weeks.

At this time, I was a part of a forum of Professionals and opened a case study, to keep my notes clear and focus.

Why was I logging this?
At this point of time, I need to have my thoughts clear. I had lost everything I had, behind helping my child's mother and a family member. I gave up all my time and money, trying to resolve their issues. Then I found myself going down from the highest point of my life to near no income flow (b/c I didn't manage my time; lost my biz and used my money) and was burning through my last .

Couldn't even afford a place to live and was living out of the brand new Jeep Wrangler I bought the December before. High to low in about 1 year.

I was down to a eBay drop-shipping biz (b/c I had no money to invest) and i found a trending product that no one trademarked and I could buy all the EMD domains. A watch.

I wanted to have clarity on every move i made.

So what happened? Because of that post, people became fans of my growth. I was honest about losing it all, etc and rebuilding.

I told people I would have the site ranking in 2 weeks and they said it's impossible. They said back-links would kill it, etc, blah.. However, one guy reached out and gave me 1 tip. 1 which i needed. He told me don't overdo it with my anchor text being 'money keywords.' And to make sure I have a 3 of 10 [ 3:7] ratio for 'money anchors' vs ' generic anchors"

results: Within 2 weeks I was ranking. Brand began earning $5k-$7 a month.

How I did it?

1 ) I bought the EMD

2) I created a site rich with written content
by looking for relayed keywords and making a page for each keyword that I could; pacing myself at writing like 2000-3000 words a day ( I was doing this from a public library in Hamilton Mills; GA and a Barnes & Nobles book-store. I was homeless at this time, living in my car. Sleeping in truck-stop parking lots & wal-mart parking lots. $10 showers at the truck stop)
  • great landing page that was an adventure to read. 1000+ words of content
    • had 3 long-tail/deep-linked pages linked to exclusively from home page
  • I created a news page, where I wrote original news on the brand, 500+ words of content each page.
    • Front page shared the top 4 most popular articles.
    • no content here had long-tail / deep-linked content
  • I had an about us page
    • this page had exclusive long-tail/deep-linked content
  • created the product page
    • had a 600+ word description
    • within description had 1 deep-linked page (exclusive)
  • many of my deep-linked pages had deep-links
    • many of these pages were 1000+ words. Some were even up to 5000 words.
    • i wanted google's spider to get lost in the depth of my site
Results of all the exclusive pages in deep linking: I had a lot of pages Google had to link to independently in search index. And to be clear, I pointed some great back-links at some of these long-tail pages because the content was great. Very informative. You never know what keywords a page will show up in search under when it's 3000 words of written, useful content.

3) White hat SEO: back-links | Getting my brand in the news

I did not have my business yet but I had been working with Google News since 2004 or 2002. Not even sure which year. But, I know/knew a lot about Google News b/c I worked with them. Knew that syndication happens when doing certain things and bigger sites pick up content when headlines and content are well done. And I knew with a lot of back-links my site would rank higher and higher for different keywords that fit the product niche.

I began writing news and giving it to different blogs.
Lots of benefits: My plan became, re-invest a small portion (maybe 10%) into getting my brand in the news. And also to get those articles linking to my site. Make myself EXTREMELY VISIBLE in every place people looked.
I even hired a writer or two to help.

  • 1 article per 2-3 days we my goal , topping Google News
  • My goal in writing style/quality was High quality / high retention from readers. This was to get articles ranking as high as possible in search and those articles pointing to my site for 'money keywords'
  • I also sometimes did Tier 2 articles , targeting keywords, then linking to other articles
  • Sometimes I even did Tier 3 links that linked to Tier 2s and Tier 1s
    • the goal here was, no matter how Google shuffled the deck, i had some articles on top of search pointing to me
  • Also, linking to social media was important. Google values Social Media profiles highly and when one seems to be 'official' they take over search and then you need those links pointing to your site to give it the 'official' credibility; this further locks in the #1 spot
Also, I bought the alternate / similiar domain and made it the 'corporate' site. No literally but just the style of content on the site and i linked it back to the main site; putting a row at top of the page advertising the watch + a 'buy now' button that took people back to the main site. Sometimes I had news link to this page as well, just to further push out any competition.

I took out some affiliates with this brand, especially after I got trademark registered.

4) Original Media (images, videos, etc)

A lot of people forget this one tip. Google search judges many sites on originality, uniqueness. This includes images and videos. I paid a fiverr photographer to shoot photos of my product (100s). I had him send me a copy of all raw images on disc and video of the product on a rotating stand. Did some edits to all of this to create original content and commercials.

This way, all images on my site could show up in Google Image Search as well. Image search tries to avoid duplicate and the technology to recognize duplicate images by pixels is AMAZINGLY GREAT. So if you dont have original images, you're failing.

I would have 2-4 original images on every page of my site. More uniqueness for the page. More points for SERPS from what I could tell.

Also, the original videos, I turned into commercials (info commercials and some 'viral attempts' for entertainment value; example - me running over product with car tire or setting it on fire). I then placed those on my "official YouTube" and then put those videos exclusively on my site. The embed helped the YoUTube videos rank and the content helped the site rank up because people would stay and watch the videos on-site, HIGHER RETENTION.

The competition died immediately b/c they couldn't keep up with my original visual content, which showed packaging I had created, etc.

End results.

This project saved my life. Helped another guy I know make money. Got me back stable, moved to a new country.
The lab study also made me realize I had a unique talent I had developed from being involved with Google News sites or so long. Especially in understanding what readers, actually want to read. I organically learned it inside and out, pretty much and gained an education during the 'hustle.'

And after 2.5 years, I sold that watch business to a company in India.

Hope this random post helps some of you.

hope you find a jewel here,

Thank you so much for sharing.
I can realize your struggling.

"realize your struggling" ?
(little reminder) your should be you're

BUT.. No. This was probably 3 years ago.

Even more advanced now. And I got out of that hole within 60 days.
And honestly one of the most peaceful times of my life , when I had to do all that by myself.
Had a ton of adventures.

Once I had a little money coming in....
I was living out of my car , stopping at ahotel every few days, with 2 fishing rods... going to diff lakes to fish ....

I think everyone should at least try the 'leaving good in storage' or 'living from your suitcase' lifestyle at least once

I had to learn fast....

bought a cooler for my truck to store food, for instance to carry fruits, veggies, etc. Still tried to eat moderately healthy.
Kroger's grilled/rotissere chicken was the go to purchase lol.. at like 2pm they discounted them to get rid of them faster....

TJ MAX super quilt ... cheap.... for when the winter hit harder.

Thank God I was not going through this in the summer time

learned a lot about urban survival in those times

And i read a lot more through this period too. another great factor. Read every morning before entering the library to work... I was there as soon as the doors opened

Great story and congrats on making it through. I don't know if its possible to rank a website in two weeks. Do you wanna try again and create a journey here as a case study?

Oh yeah! A side note that's important.

Page Speed does matter 100%.
It matters a lot.
Make sure your page is error free and loads fast.

Nice Insights google news sites if used properly can definitely drive lots of traffic, but I see some big news sites with low page speed so you feel big sites are allowed to get away?

In utilizing sites, EXPERIENCE, is invaluable

It takes years of using various sites to know how to use them properly BUT you have to start somewhere, to begin to know them

A site with 5 Million visits monthly traffic may get less results in SERPS positioning than one with 70k visits monthly

Having the 'wisdom' from actually using sites helps tremendously

There's also other variables that can effect positioning and link juice passed on tot eh target site

BIG sites, that spend a lot of money with Google, are definitely allow privileges others are not. Also sites that google doesn't want to join in on the 'anti-headlines usage' groups

Got a few questions presented to me from this post, in private. A common one from newbies is this:
Can a website that has no real content, just sponsored articles, be of value?

answer
I would not use these sites for back-links to a project I plan to work for more than 1 year. I dont care how cheap of deal, how nice it looks, or whatever. i would not.

Google hires THE BEST people in technology to figure out spam site habits and similarities. Once they have a formula that identifies these sites pretty accurately, they HAMMER THEM. Boom, now your site's lost value and identified as a part of a spam network.

Google does respect News sites that need to make money and allow sponsored articles without problem. But the site has to be making an effort add something useful to Google/Google news.

If there's no REAL CONTENT , no quality writing, I would just stay away from it. By all means, unless you are a professional with years of experience to understand what you're doing.

I mention this exact tip in quite a few of my posts here. Unique images & video content go a LONG way coupled with keyword rich, quality content.

Even a quick 5-10 minute Photoshop editing session can put you ahead of certain competitors.

People forget the 3rd biggest search is image search and it also shows up in regular search many times.

Unique images can have great impact on search.

I actually have an artist that i use to create unique images for much of my clients' content.

Great post, a lot of motivation and hope for everyone currently struggling. Thanks!
