As the headline states, my friend is an experienced mechanical engineer but has never worked as a freelancer. Since we know each other for many years I want to help him with getting some work so he can get started earning money to help with house budget.

As my experience is mostly with amazon affiliate websites I am not sure how to approach this problem and am hoping some creative people here will give me some ideas how to promote him best so he starts getting some work. I own GSA SER+ CB, Scrapebox and Zennoposter if that may help somehow.

Any free or low cost effective ways to do this would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Zatoichi

Why can't he do it locally?

He isn't marketing inclined at all. I will help him fill out great profile information, include all the keywords he has qualification for so people can find him easier.
Also, I will fake buy his gig and leave him excellent review so he starts as somebody who already got one job and 5 star review.

What I am looking for are some other ideas of how to promote him white hat or black hat, anything which will not actually result in a ban for him.

There isn't so much work locally. High unemployment. So he is going to try online.

What service is he offering specifically?

From there, possibly linkedin is the better option

The best way i found to promote fiver / upwork etc is to add positive reviews , now they can be legit but they can also be fake...

    depends on you really

Yeah, he should have linkedin profile also. I'll remind him of that. Well, he has experience in product development, 3d modeling, drafting, stress analyses... etc.

As he has a full time job small to medium design and drafting projects would be perfect. Something he could squeeze in on evenings and weekends.

Yes, 3d modeling, drafting, product development....

For sure. I am gonna "buy" his services and leave him excellent review so he at least has something to begin with.

I'm wondering what else could be done?! I was thinking something along the lines of submitting his resume to the online job directories in USA, Canada, ... with a link towards his freelance profiles....

I don't know if posting to some facebook groups have any sense?! Other social networks ?!

Nope, just make sure to get him multiple positive reviews , also tell him to display his most important projects on his page
