I don't think I've got spider phobia but I hate them so much, I just can't stand them, I don't get scared when I see them but when it comes to picking them up and throwing them away I literally get the chills. Thinking about this alone makes me want to shiver. I've seen this skinny one today with 8 legs, somewhat small body but it looked mutated because the two front legs were so long compared to the rest. Flushed it down the toilet but first used like 1/5th of a toilet roll to pick it up. I don't know why I'm scared of them but it's definitely not because I'm scared that they might bite me or anything like that. I find them hideous and killing them is not an option because that just makes it even more unpleasant for me. Killing them would probably be the last thing I'd do, picking them up would be the second last. I even find it repulsive to step on a spider and crush it with my shoes, that's something I'd never do.

I don't know, maybe I'm just weak hearted but fuck I know a lot of people that are scared of spiders. I don't think I will ever overcome my fear. I found this picture on Yahoo Answers and I'm disgusted, this is definitely much larger and completely different than the one I saw today but I can't even look at it for more than a few seconds. If I saw one in real life, I'd probably get a heart attack. :|

And I thought I was the only one who had this "hatred" feeling against them. No idea why, but when I see spiders, I autonomously hate them.

It's a primal instinct, so only logic will not get rid of this fear, repetition and starting with tiny/small spiders would be the best approach. Like you I'm not afraid but even I don't picking up the those big scary looking ones!

    eat them!

Just kidding. Arachnophobia can be difficult to deal with. Being afraid of something irrationally is difficult to get rid of. You can convince yourself that they dont hurt you (which you already know). Try to just psychologically convince yourself that there is nothing to be concerned about everytime you see a spider.

I have zero problems with spiders, although when I lived in South Africa, I found two really massive ones in my house that really freaked me out - the one was really big and hairy, the other one was big and very skinny, none of them dangerous as far as understood, but nasty to look at

cockroaches on the other hand, I can't stand, hate them more than snakes

Did anyone else think he was referring to search engine "spiders" and not real spiders?

    Share your stories, eh?

Ok. I'm not afraid of spiders, however, I'm highly allergic to them. I've had a couple times where I was bit by a spider that required urgent attention. The last time though...takes the cake. I was bit on the back of my thigh same time last year by a brown recluse. I broke out with a horrible case of cellulitis from head to toe. The hospital where I live is not very good. The first two trips to the ER, I was seen by a nurse practitioner. She gave me an iv and sent me home, thinking I'd get over it...well, I didn't. The third time, I was seen, again, by a NP. This time she finally got an MD to come check me out. He hospitalized me. He was under the impression I had MRSA, even though I told him several times I knew that's not what it was. I will spare the graphic details...but it wasn't pretty. The scar healed up decently, but I'm a lot more cautious now. Many ivs, four days, and a shitton of morphine later...I've learned that spiders are just not for me. :)

I don't get scared when I see the small ones at home, it's just that if they're there I have to throw them out, and to throw them out I have to pick them up, this is what freaks me out. I just don't want to touch them, the thought that I pick them up and they go crazy running around my hand makes me shiver. I think this may somewhat be something to do with OCD.

If only it was possible... :p

    Take a break. :p

Sometimes I feel like this, this way I don't touch them in any way or form. (But then again, what if they haunt me? lol):

Sounds frightening, and thanks for sparing the graphic details but I kind of Googled it and saw it for myself, definitely not something pretty. Hope you're all good now, and watch out for those spiders!

I think the best way to overcome your fear is with either:

Any spider I see gets one of the two with the exception of daddy long-legs (the non-spider but still arachnid.) Have had horrible experiences and have 2 fatal/horrible spiders in this region.

I don't like them either but I can look at them with more ease compared to looking at spiders.

Theoretically: fear of spiders = phobia. My lecturer said that to overcome phobias, you must increase exposure to the object you fear (so if you fear looking at them, look at them more often)

Practically: I have a fear of bees and wasps. Never quite been able to overcome it

You guys are aware that the Daddy Long-Legs are highly venomous right? Seriously.
Great News is that if they bite a human, they cannot penetrate their skin, so they are harmless to us:)

Marusa, arnt Brown Recluse also venomous?

In high school I worked at a local Petco (Petshop), they sold tarantulas and scorpions, I always got stuck getting them out for people because everyone else was afraid of them. The bad part was that so many people wanted to see them that had no interest in buying them, just wanted to see them up close. BTW I also HATE spiders. Not afraid of them, I just hate everything about them. LoL. Some of the Goliath bird eater tarantulas we got in were as big as my palm too....

Yes, and it's a strange thing because you don't really feel anything until a few hours later and then it feels like liquid fire running through the surrounding tissue. Hard to describe, but it hurt something fierce.

I fear spiders as well. What scares me about them is not that they can bite me and kill me, but that they can do that without me even knowing it while I'm sleeping, or just watching tv. Thats what sparks my fear.
