So after browsing sites fmylife or mylifeisaverage for months, I've been wondering if I can make money by building a similar site. Is there any other way to monetize it besides placing ads? I mean the layout is so simple that users will know where the ads are after several visits, and they only visit the sites to read in the first place. So how do the owners of those sites make money? Do they rely on clicks from new visitors?
    Thanks for your time.

For starters, you could offer a paid ad where webmasters will pay you for their ad to be placed on your site at a monthly/weekly charge.

I'd suggest searching (G) for "text link ads" and start from there.

Placing ads where people pay you for a certain amount of time is your best bet at heckle said.
Otherwise I would suggest placing different ads from various advertising networks.

Im currently trying to monetize my version of FMyLife Script as we speak.

Its all about placement of the ad you can place the ad in different places and typically this will change the ratio. Works very well for me and I have a strong ctr

Changing ad placement will work, but just because you already have fmylife with certain ad placement does not mean it will not work for you. Even if people are familiar with something (such as Google ads), the way their eye reads the page is going to remain same.

You could always put in in the content. Like a nice banner every 5 posts or so? Users can't miss it then. Depends on how many posts you have per page, though. But I think embedding in content would be very effective.

you could also have a premium section and a free/lite user section for people that don't want to pay a monthly subscription fee

Location, Location, Location...... it's all about the placement. Ramping it up to a premium placement may also yield benefits as mention already.

I put some widgets for an affiliate store inbetween posts towards the bottom and have a link at the top of the page. Search for mylifeispwnage to check it out
