I would like to open a discussion about blogging success and your experience.

Some metrics that I value to measure the success of a blog are:

    - Repeated visits.

    - Number of comments received

    - People subscribed to RSS

    - Bounce Rate

    - Participation in social networks, share content on Facebook, Twitter, Google+

What is your opinion about this?

Ask yourself: Why do I have a blog? Then, measure that.

To go more specific, ask yourself "What are steps everybody has to go through as they accomplish what I want them to accomplish?" Then measure at each step.

Look for the metrics which define user engagement. Other than repeat visits, I also find Avg. Time Spent, Number of pages visited per sessions quite effective in measuring the overall health of blog.

Success will be relative to your goal.

    1. If your blog is for attracting and retaining visitors than user engagement should be given more importance.
    2. If your motive is sales, affiliate sales then instead of visitor count you should look into conversion per 1000 etc.
    3. If you are just using it for creating buzz and viral content and social media will be more important and social factor be should
    be looked upon carefully.

So many ways to define success based on ones opinion and goal :)

A blog is "successful" when it gives you the results that you want from it. This could be engagement, conversions, visits or simply a platform to release your ideas to the world - or a combination of all of this and more. Only you can determine this.

I do think the metrics are very okay btw. They need to be explained in details however sos as to paint the picture of what is expected per metric. At times people do own blogs but find that they are not gettingv the best out of it. So for my opinion, such like discussions will help them know the mistakes done and how best to correct them and forge ahead.
