    Yo, what's good?

    Gotta a question, I know this isn't a computer forum, and I hope I don't
    offend anyone.

But I think this is a relevant question since I'm sure everyone else is
downloading and installing all of these programs too.

...But I just reformatted my laptop and DAMN! I forgot how fast my machine
is (I wanna keep it like this, as much as possible)

What program is good to keep the CPU running smooth, protect registry,
    etc.

Not which anti-virus is good but what keeps the CPU running smooth after
    about 1,500 program installations?

    'Preciate it, Holla at cha.

    1) Derangement you HDD
    2) Use tuneup utility. works good with XP & Vista
    3) Remove useless apps.
    4) If you have $$$ & know a little but about hardware, use SSDs instead of regular HDD. You'd go crazy with ur systems speed..lol

    get a good antivirus/firewall

    I recommend NOD32 security suite. (u can torrent/rapidshare this)

    registry cleaner:
    ccleaner (free)

use firefox, IE has gotten better recently but Im just used to firefox now :)

Also, look at what your running in the background, if your running alot of programs thats why your pc is going to slow.

Make a copy of all software that you use at least once a week on an external hard drive of some sort then once a month reformat your computer. This is what I do and I have a 80GB hard drive loaded with useful stuff I use almost weekly. Also if you install it to your external that does not take up as many resources as it being on your main hard drive.

all you really need is a firewall, you don't want any data going out of your pc, anti-virus will slow down your pc , i wouldn't keep one on all day long, just use it to scan new files, also bro, i dunno but once you been on the pc you start to learn the basics, don't open shit that u don't know who/what it was from/or what it is

whenever you open a new file, your taking a risk, regardless. you don't know how well they put time into making it seem legit/trustworthly

also you have to comprehend if someone Really wants in on your pc they will get in, time is on there side not yours. (i've learned that from cisco networking)

those people wouldn't want to get in unless you piss them off though, trust me there is ways with the 0sec exploits to get in if someone really really wanted in.

always keep ur msconfig startup to a firewall , don't have it load like over 6 processes, just manualy start them

you have to comprehend anti-virus programs are just protecting you from whats been already out and released and that is known, script kiddies can whip up a custom undectable rootkit in seconds and they just simply need to wait for a exploit thats out and boom ur hit, plus if your into social networks , which is a gold mine for ID theft, your friends can be used as pawns(social eng.) to get to you.

just don't piss people off, your bound to find someone with more knowledge then you

for example, i went into a irc room, (that is widely known) told off everyone and then they threaten to ddos my pc, i said do it (i doubted them) before i knew it my pc was ddos'ed then i call my isp and they said the gateway in my area is getting knocked down, it was supporting a area of 100k users. basicly that kid had mucho bots and knocked down not just my single ip but the gateway for the area, very nice (it wasn't to complex he just either rented/leased/friends with/or owned the bots)

one thing u really want to stay away from is rootkits =X

every two weeks (or weekly if you are on your pc 5+ hours a day) run CCleaner (free app), defragmentor, disk cleanup, and spybot search and destroy. this has kept my pc fast. also, your pc will get slow over time if you don't reboot every day or so.

If you are on Vista, I believe you can schedule disk defragmenting, or maybe it is on auto when the system is idle. It also has built-in windows defender for spyware.

By the way, I don't use Vista on my desktop, I just use it for my media center.
