There are a lot of things that go into it. Backlinks, social signals, you name it.

Which is the best? Most people recommend testing things out and playing around until you figure out a method that you like. But since Google changes their algorithm, it's probably best to keep playing around with methods even if you find something you like.

One suggestion that I liked was to get two websites in the same or similar niches with similar competition and try ranking them with different methods.

I'm not an seo guru but indexing is not something that requires a certain skill set. All you have to do is publish a page, and if your page is not spam happy, it will be indexed. All you have to do i place your keywords in to titles, urls, meta descriptions and content so that search engines correlates your page to that keyword. To see list of your indexed pages just type in Google search box site:yourwebsiteDOTcom and it will show all of your indexed pages.

Which search engine do you want to be indexed in? For google, make sure you have an xml sitemap, and submit it into webmaster tools. Also set your country preferences (e.g. google.co.uk) and that should be enough. High quality pages are easy to get indexed, but you'll have a lower success rate with automated pages or low quality content.
