The obvious answer is - write more
But it's really not that simple.
The biggest contributing factor to writing well is a good command of the language, but
not necessarily English. Intellectual growth plays a huge part too, but I've talked about that further down below.
Grammar has nothing to do with writing well, it's just what makes the written thing easily readable, same as punctuation and formatting.
Writing in English well doesn't come from knowing English well, it comes from being able to write in your own language well and transfering that skill. So, if you can't fully command English grammar, spelling, colloquialisms, sentence structure, or really whatever the fuck you're struggling with, but you can write reasonably good in your own language, then you can just translate those articles as practice.
Try not to rely on software or dictionaries too much, instead, use a
thesaurus. This will help you naturally take in new words and synonyms as you write, not just give you the outright answer you instantly forget, like Google translate would.
You need to read a lot and talk a lot with people, so find some group or subreddit or channel where people
discuss things, not just 'talk' as in share low effort memes and comments, and engage in that for a bit every day.
The final most important thing, if you'd ask me, is that you need to have a strong and healthy level of intellectual development. Kinda in an academic way, for the most part. I'm talking about being able to do
good research, and interpret what you researched, get a good grasp on it etc.
When you can do that to a high degree, then the only thing left to do is to digest it for the average lackey reader. Make it complicated (in structure, in areas covered), but at the same time super easy to understand (for those reading with reasonable capacity).
The absolute best way to do this is to just stand up, right now, yeah, and think of a topic your IRL friends are fucking clueless about. Then, over the next 10 minutes pretend you're teaching them about it. Perform this exercise every day. This is something I do,
but as I'm a pretty crazy dude it hasn't helped me sound less crazy.
Also, never dumb down content unless your client wants you to.
All in all, grammar comes last in the picture. Get grammarly premium, it's a must, but you can easily land your first money from writing without it, and I'm talking from experience. I have it but only use it for plagiarism check, so again, don't rely on tools too much. Always rely on your own brain when writing.
So, the process is:
- Learn to do research
- Learn to interpret researched topics and digest them for the average user
- Practice by explaining things to people verbally
- Then practice by writing in either your own language or English, which ever you feel more confident in
- Learn to how visualize data nicely, by graphs, infographics, bulletins, etc. Incorporate that into your pieces to make them even more enjoyable and easier to follow.
- Focus on ease of readability, always.
This is where I personally always fuck up as a writer by overcomplicating things. A readability test
IS NOT grammarly, nor wordcounter, nor Flesch-Kincaid, and the list goes on. It's if when you can open the article from a
reader's perspective and instantly have a sense of where all the information belongs. This comes from having good titles, better subheadings, organized bulletins, informative pictures/images, excellent anchors that shine in that shitty shade of blue and point the reader to where in the article a certain keyword is discussed. There are many more things to look out for, I'll write a post on BHW soon where I'll outline all of that good jazz.
Lastly - grammar, spelling, punctuation, and all the boring shit. In the beginning, if your content is really good, just find a friend to proofread or hire someone. You don't need to be an expert in grammar, just be good at the actual writing. You'll have a chunk of your money slip away, but you will be producing quality shit. Focus on the fundamentals. I know people who swim in writing money and they sound like apes online. They pay 1/4th for a good proofreader, the rest goes to their incoherent and illiterate pocket.
