wow ! what a post you did . Such a knowledge . Thanks .
The main freelance sites...I don't look for VA's on BHW.
How do you hire them full time paid directly or do you use the websites tracking and payment facilities. P.s great post
I hire direct. We have our own tracking and dashboard where everything is recorded. Really don't do much with the larger more common freelancer sites - but it depends on what you need - if it's just part time their systems can work.
Not to ask to detialed about your operation but odesk and freelancer how do you get the contact details of the person without signing upto and using the site. I used odesk in the past but only tried freelancer today and i cant seem to be able to post a full time job without them charging $200
I remember trying to hire Philippinos when I lived in Angeles City, Pampanga. It was almost impossible to get good writers.
The instructions above would absolutely deter anyone from working for me. We are talking university graduates who would be horrified. And, if you got someone who could follow those instructions they would work for a week and then go back to their homes and find work on O'desk and so on. One thing many people do not understand is that a huge factor with hiring someone here is the benefits. So the pay may sound reasonable from your end but when it comes to having no benefits here they end up not being happy.
On the good side, once you show them what they need to do they are good to go. I figured it was worth my while to teach them. They love repetition. I had up 25 staff working for me at one time. I provided a cook, maid and food for all my staff. It was a great experience.
My wife does simple tasks on the Internet and she loves it. And, it keeps her out of my hair. She talks with clients on Skype and Yahoo for work. She is absolutely stunning and gets jobs when she wants.
I don't mean to steal this thread,
Just Saying.

My #1 method is to use a recorded podcast - and that works well after hiring too because often, rather than email, I'll give instructions and tasks by way of voice recording from my phone as I'm cruising around somewhere (or half asleep in bed) and think of something.
So - I've recorded one big long grand-daddy of an 'intro' podcast, about 45 mins long, seeded with things all the way throughout to test their listening skills and their attention to detail. Then at the end, it says "if you'd like to apply, email me with xyz", and if they didn't listen closely or don't care about details, they'll skip those things and consequently go straight to my trash can.
Then, I have two more 'house keeping' style pod casts that I use after I hire someone, which sets out clearly the expectations and tells them what's ok and what's not, and generally how I work, to prevent me from having to answer the same questions each time or deal with confusion arising from lack of communication.
So, much the same principle as your post netmoney - and I certainly agree that the quality you end up with after going through that exercise is simply amazing compared to the riff-raff that otherwise applies.
And, by having pre-recorded podcasts, my entire hiring/screening process runs off an auto-responder, and I just glance briefly at the applications as they come in, and it takes about 6 seconds to either trash it, or short list it.
