For an idea I am planning, my clients will have mailing lists. I would love to use Mailchimp, but I don't think this is what I need in this situation. Mailchimp seems to be great if you are managing your own mailing list. My clients will have their own separate mailing lists. I could send the mail through my server, but I know there is some crap where my mails will end up in spam folders.

Mostly it depends how big is your mailing list, for small lists use mailchimp or aweber or whatever you like, but for large lists powermta + multiple ips + ip routing. But if you use mailchimp or aweber, always ask your customers to add them to the safe mailing list to avoid spam folders

I am looking at mailchimp's mandrill like you said. They mention the first 12k emails sent are free. Is there a catch? I think 12k emails a month will be more than I need for quite a while.

Create your own smtp server in vps using virtualmin it will take only 30 minutes to complete all and install any php script to send emails.
