I don't care how tedious the task is... I'll do it. I want to grow a following from the ground up. I'm trying to get into the Athetlic lifestyle niche and Adult.
How did you guys start? Any tips? Much appreciated

Buy a software tool that uses the Twitter API then create about 100 accounts, then follow the followers of your competitors.

You need to optimize your profile to suit your target audience. In other words, you need to have a good reason for people to follow you back. After that, the next step is to use a twitter bot to autofollow the correct type of users. If you autofollow random people, than they won't convert nearly as well as a targeted group of followers. Check my sig link for more info on this.

Use a software tool to allow you to follow a pack of people who also follow your competitors. Youtube it, you can find some useful tutorial out there.

    1. Make sure your profile is Complete! Profile Pic, Cover Pic, Description, etc...

    2. Make sure your account is active, that you have posted and are continuously posting Tweets relevant to your account.

    3. Get some iMacros and start using Twiends/AddMeFast and other such services.

    4. Do what the others said

    5. Actually engage people that comment on your tweets, retweet stuff from your followers relevant to your niche, etc (this is the step I hate most, primarily because it can't be automated)

    Good luck :)

Yes that's right! Try to also build a botnet with tons of custom accounts.
