So, I've never actually tried to get links from Wikipedia. I have no idea how it works. I know it can't just be as simple as editing a page... Do I need to get approved or something?

So I need to get an account, start posting good edits, get approved more and more, and then start dropping links?

Nope. You can just edit pages anonymously and hope the links will stick. If the site you link to is closely related to the page topic and they think it adds value for the visitor (which means overly commercial sites won't have a chance) the link might well stay.

I have done that several times and the links are still there - months or even years later. Depends on the site and pages you try to link from.

You can get links, and they can give you traffic, depends on the niche, but 100% it wouldn't be sticky for a long time. Deletes always in my practise.
