Not for this particular keyword... but what does it take to get into the top spot?

you have to bid enough high comparing to others. Higher qs helps too. If you have low QS it's impossible.

Ah, I knew it had something to do with quality. Any suggestions or articles that you know of in how to improve QS?

It really depends on your niche, your quality score, but mainly how much you're willing to pay.

For example - I've recently been running an adwords campaign for the company I work for with HUGE success because it's such a micro niche. I was in the number 1 highlighted spot in only 3 days, and probably could've gotten there over night if I knew what I was doing when I started.

The thing about it though is that my niche is like I mentioned ultra targeted and a very micro niche. I'm not selling a clickbank product, cpa offer or any common place thing that internet marketers tend to do, but rather I'm promoting a service (an accounting service to be exact) that is so tedious there is VERY little competition in the U.S. and each each lead turns in to about 4k-6k of profit for my company if not more.

But if you were to get in to something like "how to lose weight" or "make money online" or hell, not even that crazily saturated of a niche, but even something simple as "fishing gear" you're basically entering into a bidding war with the competition to see who has the deeper pockets unless you've got a ridiculously high QS.
