How to get the best out of instagram hashtags?

Should I post hashtags regarding my post(picture/video) or just popular one or the mix of both?

Less reach is there of my posts on Instagram and that is eating me up literally!

Apart from what you select, identify localized hashtags as well. I was doing this global campaign where I picked up German, Russion, French hastags for which I used to always be at the top. Gave me a really good traction for that time. See if this is something that you can incorporate as well.
