So its nearly 5 am and its the time of the night where I kinda think about life in general before sleep.

So its probably pathetic but I have an irrational phobia of driving. No matter what happens, every time I try to sit behind a wheel of a car to practice, I feel sick, sweaty and just very dizzy in general. I had an instructor straight up tell me that "some people just aren't cut out to drive" which honestly was pretty funny.

    Anyway,

Ive tried all sorts of therapy but I came to the conclusion that its a big joke because no matter what, it never gets better. When I used to Live in London, I wouldn't think twice about driving, but living in eastern europe means everything is very spread out. Uber doesnt operate where I live so currently I rely on using a taxi to get around places which can be a little unconvenient.

    Any suggestions?

I know its probably an issue no one had to deal and I guess maybe im venting a little too but its late, but any suggesitons welcome.

Take your time, there is no rush.

Drive around in an empty parking lot. Keep driving on such places until you feep confident to.hit the road.

Yoi just need.a.few hundred hours.worth of time.behind the wheel and you will be good to.go.

I had this problem when I first started driving. It actually stemmed from taking my driving test without knowing how to drive, something I brought up on this forum before.
Anyway, for years I couldn't get behind the wheel of any car without fearing an accident. It was at the point where even though I had access to different vehicles (my grandfather let me borrow his car at the time), I opted to ride a bicycle instead. So do you want to know what helped me get over my driving phobia?

I bought "the right car" for me. I took the time to research what I really wanted in a car and then I bought one that I felt matched what I was looking for within my budget. My car helped me become more comfortable driving and these days I can drive pretty much any motor vehicle without breaking a sweat (though I'm not a fan of driving newer cars; they just "feel funny" to drive).

Just so you know how far I've come, I just got back from aimlessly driving my car around for 30 minutes at night during a dust storm with high speed winds on a curvy road. I wasn't worried at all.

Ride a dirt bike around a track and have some fun it will get your adrenaline up and scare you at the same time for the first bit....... Then being trapped in a metal box with speed limits and air bags will be a walk in the park. Once you try something that causes more fear things that use to cause fear cease to exist. It's a good trick to build tolerance and ease your mind. After sky diving roofing a 4 story house will seem like your putting in a basement. Cheers I hope this helps

This classic "avoidance therapy" or "distraction therapy" and OP, it actually WORKS.
Also you could try driving on familiar roads to get the confidence levels up again.
80% Confidence 20% skill, so go on, you can do it!! :)

@Zwielicht what was that? a kangaroo? or a deer?
    Oh Dear

I was involved in multiple car crashes which led me to fear all kinds of vehnicles.
    A lot.
Whenever I would get into one, I felt as if time stopped and someone was chocking me.

How did I get over it?

My father who was sitting next to me called me a faggot and told me to drive or otherwise I would be kicked out of my house.

So I drove and after around the fiftiest time, the fear subsided to a level that I barely notice it these days.

Funny thing is I got kicked out anyways :p

Not sure if it helped you but felt nice to share.

thank you for all your messages everyone. It's nice to know i'm not the only one to go through this. I'm still 22 so its not so bad. Luckily here, there are barely any cars so its not hard as it would be somewhere in the UK for example. Ill keep trying!

Honestly, you need extra skill to drive on eastern european roads haha, holes, bumps - just awful roads. I failed my first driving test cause I was driving too "reckless" lol. Your fear will eventually fade!!!

I've been through something similiar. Except it only happens when I know I'll reach certain destinations (traffic, for instances). It would blow me away and I would freeze mid traffic.

I reached a therapist who made me confront my fear alongside him. It was my best decision ever. The first few times I have to drive there with my mom or my girlfriend, but I learnt a lot. Especially when it comes with dealing with anxiety which is something that bugs me since forever.

Care: my first therapist was out of college and thought he was like some kind of anxiety guru. He took things too far and made my fears worsen to the point I couldn't enter a car alone. Only when I researched for an expert I could overcome my fear.

WIsh you the best of luck, and remember. You can't be afraid of something you've already done. So go ahead and drive one minute in the parking lot. Next week five. Next month 30 mins. You'll be driving in no time.

It's not pathetic at all. I'm old and don't drive, the reason I'm not driving is based on two reasons:

    1. There's millions of dickheads out there, I'd likely end up losing my mind and getting into fights.

    2. Frankly I have a hard time remembering what socks I put on this morning, let alone learning to drive.

So you end up putting your life in the hands of one of the many dick-brains out there?

Don't take it too seriously and don't watch any car crash videos beforehand, lol. Just take it slow and ease into it. Also, this gives me an excellent opportunity to post more Umaru-chan content.~
