Apparently Google doesn't crawl and index .EDU forum profiles very well.
I've got several profiles set up in multiple forums.
I pinged the urls at Pingler.
Then I bookmarked the urls at JumpTags.
The JumpTags links were indexed in about 30-40 minutes.
These links contain the urls to the .EDU forum profiles
but the profiles still haven't been indexed.

Has anyone had success getting any forum profile backlinks indexed?
I'm starting to think that forum profile backlinks are a waste of my time.
I haven't seen much of an improvement in the SERPs either.

Anyone know how to get 'em indexed?

Also curious to know how long you've waited ^

You can try submitting them to Digg, although I tested it yesterday by submitting one of my forum profiles but didn't have any luck. I've heard it's possible though, so perhaps you just have to be lucky and submit at the right time.

You could also link to the profiles from a blogger blog which is already indexed, I find this helps getting profiles indexed.

I started this project on Dec. 21, 2009 when I created 9 .EDU forum profiles. I didn't ping these or bookmark them at JumpTags yet and NONE of the profile pages have been indexed. I pasted the url's (using quotes) into Google to see if they're indexed, but nooooo.

The most recent set of 12 .EDU forum profiles I created on Feb 6, 2010. I just pinged them @ Pingler & bookmarked them @ Jumptags yesterday, Feb 9th.

Like I wrote before, ALL my JT links have been indexed quickly but not the .EDU forum profiles.

Side Note: I just made a post in a thread in a PR8 .GOV forum today. Then I pinged it at Pingler. I pinged both the thread url & the url for my post. I submitted the .GOV link to JumpTags 1 hour & 20 minutes ago and am trying to get my forum post with a link in my sigfile spidered.

    Good point! Thanks for that!
I went over the code for my profile page 3 times and can not find a robots.txt file.

Where should it be? In the <body>?

Assuming there isn't a robots.txt file, what does that mean?

I see my **************** anchor link though.

robots.txt is a file found in the root of the domain

you would find it by doing

    domain.com/robots.txt

why are you trying to get your profiles indexed?

dont tell me you believe that myth that your pages have to be indexed in order for the links to count.

a lot of profile links wont show up in the index but if your site keeps on moving up the SERPs then what does that tell you?

a great way of finding your profile links is searching by the username in quotations.....dont search the URL

Couldn't find a robots.txt file using your method. This is what I got when I tried:
    HTTP Status 404 - /robots.txt

    type Status report

    message /robots.txt

description The requested resource (/robots.txt) is not available.
    Apache Tomcat/5.5.9

    ---------------------------

Why am I trying to get my profile indexed?

My understanding is that if Google doesn't find my backlink, then my site won't get credit, link juice, ranking boost for it.

So I'm trying to get google to my profile to spider the page and find my link.

Are you saying that the profile page doesn't have to be indexed, that my backlink only needs to be crawled or spidered by Google for my site to get the link juice?

Did not find my profiles by doing a search for my username in Google.

Try leaving a few comments on blogs, that should do the trick.

Ya, comment on a few blogs using a random name/email and use your profile URL in the website field.

Both Abstroose and BalingDazzer comments seem to suggest that the new profile page will not likely get spidered unless there is an external backlink to it.

When I create a profile on an *authority site*, do I even NEED to create a backlink to it? (like you suggest)

I thought the whole reason to create profile pages (with links to your sites, of course) on high PR authority sites was that they are frequently spidered (so the new profile page you just created gets found - as well as its links) thereby not needing a backlink itself in order to get found.

Yes, high PR authority sites ARE frequently spidered, but are the profile pages frequently spidered? Not necessarily. As someone else wrote above, if there is a robots.txt file telling search engine spiders not to crawl profile pages, then they won't get crawled and your backlink won't get found.

I suspect that if that's the case then pointing another backlink at your profile page isn't going to help get it crawled either due to robots.txt.

Yes, there's always that too. I saw someone posted earlier in the thread that they attempted to check robots.txt files and was denied access by the webserver. Anyone know how we can address this?

it means they probably dont have a robots.txt

getting the page spidered and indexed are 2 different things

when i setup profiles i do google alerts beforehand with the UNIQUE username so i would get a hit when google crawls them

either way...i dont pay attention to that...i pay attention to if my site goes up the rankings

There are two scripts I use to get my profile links indexed.

One is called "Backlink Indexer Express" and the other is called "Backlink Booster"

Basically, the both integrate with ping.fm - Backlink Booster updates all of the sites automatically with a snippet of text and a link to your site and Backlink Indexer Express updates the "blog" sites on ping.fm with content from an RSS feed of your choice and a link to your profile.

I have the Indexer Express script automatically updating blogger/xanga and a couple of other blogs with content from an Ezine Articles RSS feed and a link to my profiles.

If they are still not indexed after all of this (some aren't) I then run them through Bookmarking Demon. If that also fails then you can also use Ice Rocket to create an RSS feed from your profiles and submit that to aggregators and also bookmark the RSS feed.

Well, my site isn't going up in the rankings (closer to page 1) so I figured the links weren't getting spidered.

Let's forget about me trying to get them indexed for now.

How do I get Google to the url where my backlink is so my backlink gets found?

Some of the pages where I place my backlinks are on pretty deep inside pages and I want to make sure Google gets there.

Any other ways besides JumpTags & Pingler?

you could try using icerocket to create a rss feed then with that rss feed go to howiespinger.com and submit your feed it will ping that feed and and submit it to 109 rss agregators whenever i do it i get my link indexed within 12 hours if its not indexed within 24hrs then there is a problem with the page the password is guest username guest or another way which is to create a blogger account do what i just suggested with ice rocket and howiespinger to get your blogger blog indexed fast then submit articles to it every hour for one week what this does is the spider bots will slowly notice your blog as being frequently updated and will come back to your blog daily after a week. Just click on personalise and select link list and drop your links in hope it works for you sorry about the typos and its 1 in the morning im very tired i have a ebook just fully explains how to use blogger to get your backlinks index fast pm me if interested

This method is working pretty well for me now:

    1) Create a new RSS/XML Channel at Ice Rocket.com
    2) Submit 20 forum profile pages where backlinks are into Channel
2a) Create as many new RSS Channels as you need with 20 new profile page links
    3) Get the RSS feed for the Channel and submit to 5-10 RSS feed submission sites
    4) Bookmark the RSS feed at Jump Tags .com & 5-10 other social bookmarking sites
    5) Ping all the above links at Pingler .com

See attached ebooks for more instructions

    Have fun
