Ok, my offline marketing strategy is basically this:

    1) Build and rank a site from scratch with local keyword
    2) Register virtual office address in target location / city
    3) Create citations / local business directory listings of a fictitious business
    4) Link it in Google Places to my virtual office address / telephone number
    4) Once site is ranking on the first page, lease out my site to a local business in the same niche and forward virtual phone number to their number

It's a bit more work than just SEOing an existing local listing, however I have a lot more control as I can point my site anywhere....if the client doesn't pay etc.

I think this works well in many niches within the same country, as you can rent multiple virtual office addresses with a single real business registration....however, what if you want to scale it out to other countries? How do I get a business address registered in Hong Kong for example if my real business isn't registered there?

Appreciate any tips from those doing similar :)

Just google virtual office address + location, but I think most sites require you to have a registered business in that location, hence my question...

I am not really in the exact same boat as you, but I have made 5 google places accounts for 5 of my local sites today. All sites pretty much ranking on low page 1, wanting to raise them up higher. Also got some YouTube videos going on.

Then I added the google places. Pity they need to send out the postcard: what a let down.

Anyway, there is an option, just so you know, to "hide address" when making the Google places. Then when you hide it, you have the chance to put in the area which you serve. WHat I did was, I hid my "address" but still put in the area I was targetting in the "areas served" section. So this won't show the actual address of the business (so if I swap business owners I won't need to wait for Google to update address etc and fuck up my rankings in the process).

Only problem is... sending the postage. I used a bit of BH trick, I wonder if it will work or not though (getting postcard send to MY address)

That's interesting kryzsiekz, let us know if it works.....I think the problem is to rank well in Google Local you need citations (Name/Address/Phone Number) on local business directories that matches up with what you have on your Google Places account. So if you hide your address I don't think this would work, or it would be harder to rank for sure...
