there are some who offer for a very short trial period (e.g.directspace.net). I don't think anyone will give you a server for free for longer time.

Dedicated servers are expensive because they are HARDWARE, you'll not find that free.
They even cost 10-30$ per month just for the power bill.

Your 2nd question is easier, sure you can use a VPS. Those often come with 30 day money back guarantee and the cheapest ones start at jsut 5$/month.
So a VPS is what you want and if all is well you can switch to a dedicated server on the same provider if you need more stability.

I just posted something on this.

I use xampp and it sets up a apache server on your desktop without using a lot of cpu(I'm running several scripts on my laptop as I type).

What I like about it is that you can edit files on the fly w/o ul/dl and it's opensource.I use it for everything from running autoresponders, to having frames on your server from your desktop.

You can even point your domain at your desktop(if your ip's not static, you have to change the domain every few days).

    Code:
    http://apachefriends.org

The only thing I ever had a problem with is you have to pull the remarks out a few(4) of the php server files to run curl.

Problem is some ISP will not like a private server hosted on their domain... I've looked in to mine and they will ban me for life if I get caught

Well, I still don't think they would care for testing purposes, but Iguess it does depend on your ISP. Mine one of the is the largest in the US and they don't allow servers; use dynamic IP'S for that reason. But my self nor any of my peers have ever been kicked off. I'm thinkin' if I was running a pr2 blog or something that might be a factor, but low to no traffic servers, I don't think they care and I have even talked about the server with their tech support.

edit: the question is really how would they define a private server? Thet would have to kick off everyone that uses limewire, bearshare, webcam server, etc. If this was true, they would lose a lot of customers.

just run it off the desktop. unless you using it for other things, that's really not financially viable.

you can always claim you had a virus and you was not actually running it yourself, then just turn it off and get them to turn you back on!

How would they know if you are running a server anyway? A standard computer is basically a server in its own right!

I additionally use XRumer from home, but now I stopped doing that. They already cut several times my line, although certainly you can say "virus... didn't know... sorry". But I don't want that attraction.
